Homeless People Turning Into Mutants!
WORRIED police and social workers say street people who scuttle through the dark alleys of major cities are mutating horribly to accommodate their nocturnal lifestyle.
And while university experts admit that extraordinary changes are taking place, they say America's homeless millions "are merely adapting to social realities" rather than undergoing some kind of great evolutionary leap back.
"Their eyes are becoming huge to absorb more light, and they are developing claws to better dig through trash in dumpsters," says Detroit social worker Gretchen Renwick, one of dozens of frontline bureaucrats who have agreed to testify on the plight of the "mutating homeless" before a Congressional subcommittee.
A New York police detective adds: "I've seen bums with eyes the size of saucers, but you aren't going to run across them in the light of day. They come out at night and scuttle through the darkness like roaches.
"I'm no scientist. But common sense tells you these people are adapting to their environment."
Social critics couldn't agree more. And they're blaming America's "selfish, shallow, consumer-crazed society" for driving street people into darkness where they seem to become a little less human with each new adaptation.
Their argument is simple: They say better-off citizens and businessmen have pressured authorities to banish street people from public view during daylight hours, leaving them little more than a twilight world of shadows and of night to survive in.
It's a harsh assessment, but streetwise cops and social workers agree with it.
They say homeless men and women who dare show their faces by day risk cruel taunts and harassment, arrest, beatings -- or even death.
