Homeless people.....

Some people don't want that help.

Quite a few homeless are poorer people with mental problems. They are not wanted by their family, because they are a burden. Thus, they are out in the street with little means of "making it".

Others, are just bums....plain and simple. Lazy people who rely on your generosity to get by. It doesn't take a lot to get a menial job, and get by a little. It isn't glamorus, but then again, is panhandling?

I didn't know we had homeless in this country. I know we have tons of mental patiens that were thrown out on the street much like YYZ said. No hospitals for them funding dryed up way back in Reagans time. Familys dont wish to deal with them. So there left out in the cold. Now Bums are differant. They were called Hobos. and would travel by hitching rides on traines. And many still do. They will go south for the winter or at least try to get south for the winter. They will work at some odd jobs to make a liitle spending money. They still have a hobo convention in some small town in Iowa every summer. 15/20 thousand show up. So we really have to diffrant things were talking about here. Even some Vets left out in the cold due to budget cuts. So it's sad when people right away say they want to be out there. That's just not true.

djv, one of the first republican bashes u have posted that I agree with. Problem with all the mainstreaming and funding drying up for the mental patients did start and get worse with Reagan.

If you ever watch ER, they have a show about every season in the winter that features a "bumcicle".

Something to think about...

The most notorious mass murderer in SC's history was a guy by the name of Pee Wee Gaskins. He was a true degenerate scumbag. By his account he had murdered well over 300 people. The majority of those people were what he called "Coastal Kills" where he would simply pick up hitchhikers, hookers, etc. and kill them for the sport of it. The others were people who Pee Wee thought had somehow "wronged him". They never could trace all of his victims to him, but they were able to pin a few, at least enough to land him in jail for life. Ironically enough, he was eventually put to death. The ironic thing is that the death sentence was for an inmate he murdered in prison, not the 300+ outside of prison. Anyway, in Pee Wee's book, one murder story stood out to me...

Pee Wee was at a rest area somewhere in SC when he approached some random guy and asked him for something (a light, money, directions, can't remember what it was) anyway, the guy looked at Pee Wee and basically said "Get lost you fukin bum". Needless to say that didn't sit well with ole Pee Wee. When all was said and done, the guy ended up dead (stabbed to death) in the rest area parking lot. The thing about it was that Pee Wee specifically said in the book he never would have touched the guy had he not been such an asshole.

The moral of this story is obvious...

I never mouth off to people I don't know b/c you never know when one of them might be a mass murderer.

I lived in Philly for 4 years gave a buck to someone on the street almost everyday. One day on the news I heard they found a guy frozen to death with over $100,000 in the bank. Anyway now I live in a small town in the midwest don't see a homeless but still give to Salvation Army to help the poor. I was thought if you could give back do it so I do just hope it gets to someone who needs it.

It was in the early 80's and my wife and I were going to see a play in NYC.We took the train down to Grand Central .It was in December and a cold nite.We had a great time at dinner and the play was great.Walking up 42nd St we entered Grand Central to return.
There were about 40 homeless men laying on the benches sleeping.You kinda want to ignore them so you look kinda straight ahead as you walk pass them.Then I heard one say "coach,coach,its me". I looked at him as he walked over to me.He had a beard and his "fro" was all knotted up.I didn't reconize him at all.He said "coach,you know who I am".I reconized his face but couldn't remember who it was.
Then I got a better look the closer he got.I said "Verdell M"He smiled a hugged me.He kept saying "coach,my coach.My wife also knew Verdell.We talked for a few minuts.He updated me on some former players and his brother who also played for me.He was to proud to ask for anything.
I reached in my wallet and gave him 35 bucks and said have a hot meal.I told him to call the school if he needed anything.He thanked me for the money and said he would call tomorrow.
Of course I knew he would never call.
My wife and I felt so bad on the train ride back.And my wife loved that kid.
Verdell could of been a model.Good looking black kid.There's an actor he reminds me of but I forget his name.
But Verdell M had one of the sweetest shots you've ever seen.
On the train ride back I thought of the "WHS" game.
It was one of those yrs where I had 10 gds.No post players or Power fds.My center was a 6'1 kid.Now I did have 5 kids that could jump out of any gym.
But WHS had a frontline of 7'0,6'8 and 6'6.The 7'0 went on to play at BC.The 6'6 became a good friend of mine and the6'8 one married a girl who now teaches at my HS.How ironic..
Anyway WHS has to play zone vs us because of my speed.
Verdell who was a lefty had a soft sweet jumper.There was no 3 pt shot back then. Verdell never missed from long range.If he didn't swish a shot,his misses would hit the rim and fall in.That freak'in lefty soft touch.Like a magnet.
Well we lose the jump ball of course but Verdell hits 3 corner jumpers and 2 from the top of the key.The score is 10-0.Then after there timeout another one of my kids gets a steal or two and were up 16-4.
Verdell hits another bomb and WHS goes out of their zone and trys to play us man/man.
That was all she wrote.Later on WHS went back to zone and we cooled off.Played them even the 2nd half.But Verdell's 5 or 6 jumpers to start the game was the key.
WHS was undefeated in their gym that yr.There record was 12-0 and I was something like 8-4.
But I'll always remember that nite.If verdell doesn't stick those jumpers that nite and force those big boys to come out we would of lost.
Not sure how Verdell ended up like that at Grand Central.But I thought about that game on the train ride home.
About 7 or 8 yrs ago I got a call from Louis U a guard on that team.He told me he heard Verdell had died of aids 10 yrs ago.What a shame. And Louie U was one crazy Dominican.He is a supervisor of security at manhattan college.

This is a sticky situation and I would believe that alot depends on where you live. Study after study has affirmed that the majority of homeless choose to be homeless. They don't fit in with society as a whole or they suffer from alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and, yes, gambling addictions. Others are homeless because they have made bad decisions about the men or women in their life. There are shelters available for most of these homeless, yet many choose not to go to a shelter. Many are former criminals that cannot fit in with the general population. All of you are right about Reagan and he started right here in California when governor. These are the people that are not homeless due to their own fault, but mentally ill. It is a shame that we cannot help them. Santa Monica is one of the priciest areas in So Cal, right smack on the beach. This city has allowed itself to be somewhat of a homeless refuge and allows people to sleep on benches or anywhere else they choose in Santa Monica. Here you mix the wealthy yuppie crowd with the homeless on a nightly basis as they stroll down the 3rd Street Prominade. Most cities in So Cal rid themselves of the homeless as fast as they can.

You know I kind of thought befor I posted this thread that I was the only one that had these mixed feelings toward the homeless. I guess they all do have there own stories of what ,when where and how they got there. Ferdville talked about the shelters and from what I understand, here in the philadelphia area they allow them in at a certain time at night and then they are put out again in the morning just to wander around all day. The sad thing is that our society has burned its bridges with drug and alcohol inpatient treatment facilities and they aren't even available for any long term help anymore:shrug: The mental patients were set free , and now some of them roam the streets because no-one wants them.

Box and One- How sad is that! My mother joined a volentary program about 2 years ago. She was assigned a person with aids , to be a buddy to. Basically the people that come to this program have no-one to talk to or arejust in need of a friend . In this instance the guy my mom befriended didn't want to tell his family in fears that they would disown him. ????? Maybe thats what happened to that guy??? She has signed up for another program which I didn't even know existed and never even thought of. Its called bundles of love Its a place where aids babies live because either they were abandoned to the state or there caregivers died from aids.and no one wants them when you volenteer alls they want to do is hold them. Can you imagine ????????? I don't know if my heart could handle it personally. She hasn't gone yet , but I am anxious to hear about it who knows maybe I'll get involved to.

Good thread though. On the same train of thought I hope I go quick-no not at the SB party. Was thinking more of when I delivered papers in my teens. I had to deliver to an Old Folks home and the ppl were starved for attention. I could easily have spent 1/2 hour there just answering questions on my route. Thats sad too, as most stare out the window, if they are lucky enough to still have the mindset. Thanx for making me think.
P.S.- I think flying into Burbank and renting a car from there to Santa Monica is best. Maybe some other Californicators will see this. GL2U...:142squint
