detroit titans ( 9-7 / 14-14 )
at
uw-milwaukee panthers ( 14-2 / 23-5 )

horizon league and espn couldnt have asked for a better championship game in this conference. both of these teams are dominating their opponents right now, but obviously doing it in different ways.

milwaukee has the #1 offense in the horizon

* scoring average: 75.0 ppg
* average margin of win in league play: 11.8

detroit has the #1 defense in the horizon (and one of the best in the country)

* allowing just 58.8 ppg
* holding opponents to 39.3% from the field
* best rebounding team in horizon at +7 rpg

season series:
1/3/05 at milwaukee.....detroit 76-68
1/22/05 at detroit .......milwaukee 61-48

milwaukee is definitely the class of this conference. theyre solid in every area of the game and they score in bunches. theyve legitimately got four guys that can beat you, and their starting five is as good as youll find at any level of college hoops. mccants is a stud and capable of scoring from everywhere on the floor. putting him on the line doesnt help either, as he's 83% from there. tucker and tigert are solid inside and each is capable of having a 16 or 18 point night every time out. theres just not a lot of weaknesses on this team.

detroit, however, is the one team in this conference that can match up with milwaukee. as good as the starting 5 is for milwaukee (and its friggin good), detroit will have the best player on the floor tonight in brandon cotton. any time you have a mcdonalds all-american on a horizon league roster, youre gonna be able to compete. cotton has scored 45 of the titans 122 pts in the 2 horizon tourney games and has averaged almost 22 ppg in his last 5. the kid can just flat out score. but detroit hangs their hat on their defense.

* theyve held their last 6 opponents this season to 53.8 ppg

* in their last 6 horizon league tourney games (spanning 3 years) theyve allowed 51.6 ppg

so it should be pretty clear how detroit is gonna try and win this game. what stands out to me, though, is the way detroit played defense on milwaukee in the two meetings this year. titans held uwm to 32% and 36% from the field. they also won the battle of the boards in both games (44-37 and 42-40). very few teams, if any, can go toe-to-toe with milwaukee like that.

im backing detroit here. its not easy for me to go against milwaukee because theyre a team capable of a blowout every time they step on the floor. but the titans match up really well with uwm and cotton is giving this team something they havent had in the last few years: a bona fide scorer to go with a top-flight defense. milwaukee wants this game in the 70s. detroit wants it in the 50s. its gonna be a real battle to establish tempo. if detroit can avoid extended scoring droughts (which is my only concern, as the titans sometimes go a few minutes w/o scoring) then they should be right there at the end.

PLAYING: DETROIT TITANS (+9)

* one point i forgot to make is how the scheduling really ends up helping detroit. normally the conference favorite has a big edge in 'freshness' and hasnt played as many games in a short span of days. but the horizon league has a two-day break in between the semifinals and championship game. detroit played back-to-back on friday and saturday but got two full days to prepare, rest, and scout. thats not typical for small conference tourneys.

Detroit has been in town here since Thursday. I really think that will hurt them. Their coach claims it was to bond the team. I think it was a huge mistake just ask Butler 2 years ago. Throw out any kind of offense tonite both teams will try to win this game with defense. UWM very underrated defense ended up 3rd in the conference. I see a 60-50 game so obviously the under I strongly feel is the way to go. I think UWM's defensive pressure forces titans into to many mistakes and they grind this game out.

psychic:

i dont see how that can hurt detroit. are you suggesting that detroit should have made the trip back to michigan after saturday's game and then come back on monday night? like you said though, this 'should' be a defensive game. ive just had no success going under on uwm games. theyre a solid defensive team themselves but any total on a uwm game less than 130 is just too tough for me to bet, even if it is against detroit

Great call, the Titans deserved a better fate though. That foul called with four seconds left was weak to say the least, however the cash spends the same. :clap:

thanks guys. couldnt have asked for a better yr in the conference. have to admit i was a little torn in the final seconds of that game. detroit busted thier ass and deserved the outright win. but part of me didnt want to see uwm get bounced cuz that team is way to good to be sitting home davidson-style for the ncaas. detroit will be back though. amazing to think cotton is just getting started and has 3 more years.

Great call gman! Loaded up on UWM at the half and hit a nice juicy middle.

If Cotton continues to play the way he did last night, he won't have 3 years left. He'll have 1-2 before he becomes a lottery pick and bolts. Hope not, though, as the Horizon is one of my favorite mid-majors along with the MVC and MAC and would like to see them get some more exposure with his presence.

If UWM doesn't play a real defense oriented team in the 1st round, I can almost guarantee I will be all over them for the upset. I think a lot of the "uninformed" will see that they struggled with Detroit at home and dismiss them without realizing just how good of defense Detroit plays. Are you thinking an 11/12 seed for them?

dont think that'll be a concern. very rare to see guys transfer from a major to a mid-major and then back to a major. he already sat out once. doubt he's in a hurry to do it again. would be interested in knowing exactly why it didnt work out for him at michigan state, as im not privy to specific details.

johnny - i agree completely about uwm. their struggle vs. detroit will be fresh in some people's minds but theyre definitely capable of winning a first round game. and frankly, theres very few teams in the country they cant match up with. barring something unforeseen (like a terrible draw) you can also pencil me in for a uwm play next thursday or friday
