HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $50,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Ready Steady Gone - Was too fresh in first race off a 7-month hiatus; Tyler Baze will take a hold and rally late.

Grandpa's Legacy - There is so much pace in here to flatter her closing style; this could be a Baze-Baze quinella.

Long Shot - Doughnut

Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up

Bring It Home - Paco Gonzalez apparently has found a trainer's fountain of youth; barn is smoking good right now.

Party Hard - Logical chalk ran a winning race for this level in last; Beau Greeley puts the blinkers on.

Long Shot - Tizwhen

Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Alley Theater - John Glenney's best shot so far to win this meet; like that Joel Rosario picks her over others.

Mi Corredora - Sharp turf try for a price tag in last; when the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer gets them good, they stay good.

Long Shot - Pericia Fina

Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Steve's Afleet - Sliding down the maiden claiming angle to this low level; like that John Sadler hires Joe Talamo.

Eleventh Hour - Ran a cropper last time as the chalk; for forgiving handicappers, can only run better tonight.

Long Shot - Latego Light

Race 5 - 1 mile, Purse $29,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Wood Art - Tremendous value for forgiving handicappers; she ran horribly in last, but is much better than that.

Sheza Maneater - Figures to be the speed of the speed today; key will be if anyone attends the pace with her.

Long Shot - Made for Magic

Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Dinnr With Nikki C - Big improvement in first start off a 3-month hiatus; figures to move forward again.

Victory Dash - Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; big class drop and facing Cal-bred are obvious angles.

Long Shot - Royally Large

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up

Baroda Court - Claimed by Melody Conlon and dropped to win; also turning back in distance, will grind late.

Tactical Talent - Been away 9-months; Hector Palma barn can't afford to give a horse away, they'll be trying tonight.

Long Shot - Buckatunna

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), $85,000 Harry Brubaker; 3-year-olds and up

Becrux - He's getting long in the tooth, but some of his best races have come at Del Mar; be in the photo late.

Tiago - Has tons of class, but is trying grass for the first time; if he takes to it like Colonel John, look out.

Long Shot - Tiz West

Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Stayonit - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; Jeff Mullins places him to win.

Fiery Rebel - Sometimes a horse runs better for a long shot jock than a top rider; will be pushing all the way thru.

Long Shot - Megillah

Best Bet - Bring It Home (race 2)

Del Mar Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$34.80; Long Shots, 10/1/$61.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 429/106/$747.40; Long Shots, 226/24/$332.60; Best Bets, 23/8/$33.00

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #11 Propsistops (10/1) in race 6 at Penn National. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Waddup G ran second at Monmouth Park paying $3.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Stats - 128/98/$724.10

At the Gate - Wednesday

At the Gate - Wednesday

At the Gate - Wednesday

We turned in a modest profit with my top picks on Monday to start the week at Saratoga, three on top in seven races (two races were washed off the turf).

Wednesday?s feature is the $150,000 Albany Stakes for three-year-old New York breds at nine furlongs on the main track.

It is a competitive group of seven runners, with Fiddlers Afleet the likely favorite off a very impressive 13 ? length win against state first level allowance company.

The colt was floundering in Southern California over synthetic surfaces, and appreciated the move back to the Big Apple.

The son of Northern Afleet is stepping back into stakes company off his career top effort and could regress off that big effort.

I wanted to take a stand against him, but I am sticking with him despite a price of less than 2/1. I am hoping we catch 9/5 and can pick up a decent exacta payoff with either Pocket Cowboys or Slevin.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Clm $35,000N2L (1:00 ET)

#6 Senor Fuego 6/5

#5 Web Gem 6/1

#8 Prince Teton 6/1

#2 Galan Fete 5/1

Analysis: #6 Senor Fuego is going to be a short price but is going to be tough to beat here in the opener. Last out he had to check in the early going, was far back and made a mild late run to finish fourth, catching an inside speed favoring racing strip that day. Two and three back in his first two trips against winners he ran into repeaters. Two back he was sixth behind the winner Blame, who won the restricted Curlin Stakes in his next outing on August 2. His last pair of speed figs are tops in here and in just his fifth career start appears to have more upside potential than most of these.

#5 Web Gem just missed last out as the heavy chalk at Suffolk against Alw-1 company. The winner of the race was Ready's Clyde, who came back to beat $35K non-winners of three in his next start here on August 24 at 24/1. Two back he was fifth in a race that produced a couple of next out winners. His recent numbers have been on the light side but he earned a triple digit Beyer last October in a runner up finish versus stakes company.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 7/5 or better.

EX: 5,6 / 2,5,6,8

TRI: 5,6 / 2,5,6,8 / 1,2,5,6,8

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 Albany S. (5:30 ET)

#4 Fiddlers Afleet 2/1

#6 Pocket Cowboys 9/2

#5 Slevin 4/1

#3 Legal Consent 7/2

Analysis: #4 Fiddlers Afleet shipped back from the left coast and rolled over state bred first level allowance company by nearly 14 lengths last out going seven furlongs. She failed to fire her best in three trips over the fake stuff while in SoCal. She can handle the stretch out, as she is by Northern Afleet out of a Quiet American mare and she ran a good second on the inner going two turns last December in the Damon Runyon. behind Haynesfield. The Hushion barn is 17% winners moving runners from sprint to route.

#6 Pocket Cowboys went gate to wire to win the NY Derby last out at Finger Lakes over a sloppy main track. The third place finisher in that race was Uncle T Seven, who came back to win a NY Stallion series race on August 12 here. There is not much early pace signed up to go here unless our top pick decides to engage early.

Wagering

WIN: #4 to win at 9/5 or better.

EX: 4,6 / 3,4,5,6

TRI: 4,6 / 3,4,5,6 / 3,4,5,6,7

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga

R3: #2 Big Flirt 8/1

R8: #3 Classic Fashion 10/1

R8: #8 Mindbender 8/1

R10: #7 Apple Grove 8/1

R10: #2 Why Then 12/1

Good luck today!

Cashing in on a calling

Cashing in on a calling

Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Becrux (8th, $20W) has a solid record on the DM turf and is in good form now. We've been burned before picking against past-class standouts like Tiago but are going to do it again anyway. Plus a $2 tri key with Becrux to win over Worldly, Tiago and Prussian.
Hunch: Yesterday we learned Bolts QB Philip Rivers got a $92 million extension and CashCall Inc., founded by prominent horse owner J. Paul Reddam, paid the state $1 million for ?loan shark tactics? to collect debt from customers. So getting $92 million means never having to say Imadethecashcall (4th, $20W), and what a good thing that is.
Sunday's handicap: Hot n' Dusty (8th $20W) went from last to second in the final quarter-mile of the Solana Beach Handicap, but second wasn't good enough to help us. The $2 tri key with Hot n' Dusty to win over Bootleg Annie, You Lift Me Up and Flashover was crushed when Hot n' Dusty was also a loser.
Sunday's hunch: Zohan (5th, $20W) led to the stretch setting a sensible pace, then was inhaled by the closers and finished seventh of eight.
Sunday's loss: $52.   Bankroll: $1,741.80.
