HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 7 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up

Doriprize - Don't mind a parking lot post in an elongated sprint; Alonso Quinonez can clock the speed late.

Frankelstein - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; like the turn back in distance, don't like the rail from the chute.

Long Shot - Twin Turbo

Race 2 - 1 mile, $85,000 Windy Sands Handicap, 3-year-olds and up

Limestone Edge - Shipped west because he's better over synthetic surfaces; won last out at Churchill, fresh and fit.

Dakota Phone - Class relief from two grade 1 stakes for this; classifies as a confidence booster for him.

Long Shot - Monzante

Race 3 - 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Sindyfromsantacruz - Sliding down the claiming ladder to a career low class; speed to play catch me if you can.

Ten's Salty Sally - Solid second in career debut for Mike Pupye; if she improves one step, she'll be right there.

Long Shot - Goal Girl Michelle

Race 4 - 1 mile, $100,000 El Cajon, 3-year-olds

Lt. Hopeful - Speed and the rail, he will set a fast pace; sprinter stretching out plays catch me if you can.

Grazen - Perfect post for Garrett Gomez to stalk Lt. Hopeful; he'll sit on his flank and try to pass in the lane.

Long Shot - Fu Peg He Rat

Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

Black Kettle - Been training all summer at Del Mar for this; parking lot post is OK, tactical speed to sit a trip.

Wicked Mischief - Impressive debut win rallying from last to first; 5-YO started slowly spotting the field many lengths.

Long Shot - Charlie and Chris

Race 6 - 1 mile, Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

Take a Hard Look - FTS from the Bob Baffert barn; his babies for Hal Earnhardt are particularly quick from the gate.

Pulsion - Did everything but win last time in a fast effort; repeat race surely puts him into the number.

Long Shot - Came Aboard

Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $60,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Good Time Sally - Good second in last after a better debut win two back; she has room to improve in a tough heat.

Mohaka - Excellent return second off a 9-month hiatus; question will be if she bounces, repeats, or moves forward.

Long Shot - Emmy Darling

Race 8 - 7 furlongs, $300,000 Del Mar Debutante, Fillies, 2-year-olds and up

Mi Sueno - Exits one impressive win in the Sorrento; she looked like a filly who was just getting warmed up.

Champagne d'Oro - Eric Guillot has an uncoupled entry; this is the longer price, showed a lot of moxie in MSW win.

Long Shot - Necessary Evil

Race 9 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $51,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Crisis of Spirit - Rumor has it Bob Baffert is loaded with fast babies; watch the tote board for clues on this.

Stockings - If Champagne d'Oro wins race 8, upgrade this one; more than liable to improve for trainer John Sadler.

Long Shot - Candy's Pleasure

Race 10 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $39,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up

Yes It's a Cat - Solid return off a 2-month mini vacation; he can turf, save ground for uncoupled Jeff Mullins entry.

Epic Power - Ran sluggishly in last, he's better than that; like that Garrett Gomez stays loyal to the cause.

Long Shot - Smooth and Savvy

Best Bet - Mi Sueno (race 8)

Del Mar Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/3/$29.60; Long Shots, 9/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 563/136/$961.20; Long Shots, 294/30/$451.20; Best Bets, 31/12/$46.40

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #7 Gold d'Oro (5/2) in race 3 at Saratoga. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Circlesandpictures won at Monmouth Park paying $3.00 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 135/103/$764.10

At the Gate - Saturday

At the Gate - Saturday

At the Gate - Saturday

Rachel Alexandra is getting all the hype as she takes on the handicap division this afternoon in the $750,000 Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga.

However, wagering on her at odds of 2/5 does not look very appealing, and taking a stand against her does not look like a wise move either.

Thankfully, there are eleven other races on the Spa card, including the $300,000 Forego Stakes (G1), which drew a full field of twelve.

The racing at Saratoga has been outstanding all meet, but Saturday?s card might be the best we have seen yet.

Most of the fields have ten or more betting interests, and there are plenty of live longshots throughout the card.

Below you will see a list of live longshots for today?s action, and it is a long one. I have 20 horses that I consider live longshots.

Those 20 are contenders I have ranked in my top four and are 8/1 or higher on the morning line.

That is close to two per race, meaning we have a great shot of nailing a few nice exactas and trifectas, and it appears to be a great card for Pick 3 and Pick 4 players.

There are just two races on the card where my top pick is going to be the likely favorite. That is the type of card I sometimes wait weeks for.

I won?t take a stand against Rachel Alexandra today, but I will take a stand against nearly every other favorite on the card.

That should make for a fun and profitable day.

Here is today's opening race from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Hcp $25,000s (1:00 ET)
#9 Americanrevolution 7/2
#6 Check It Twice 5/1
#3 Base Commander 7/2
#2 Kaper Lake 3/1

Analysis: #9 Americanrevolution gets the call in a tough opener. The gelding is making his first start off nearly a three-month break and shipping in from Calder. The gelding was bumped coming out of the gate, dueled for the early lead and faded to finish fifth last out in stakes company. That snapped a three race win streak, a pair at Calder and four back he beat similar company at Gulfstream Park. Romans takes over the training duties on this guy, who has popped a couple of quick works in the mornings since arriving in NY. He owns solid early and mid pace numbers and he is a perfect 4 for 4 at today's distance.

#6 Check It Twice won the What a Pleasure as a two year old, but has only made two starts since. He returned off an 11 month layoff last out for a $25K tag, not exactly a good sign. He ran a decent second and was claimed out of the race by the Jacobson barn that is 17% winners first off the claim. The colt obviously has some physical issues, so a tough read what we are going to see out of him here, but it is encouraging to see the new barn have him protected here in a starter handicap.

Wagering
WIN: #9 to win at 5/2 or better
EX: 6,9 / 2,3,6,9
TRI: 6,9 / 2,3,6,9 / 2,3,4,6,9

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 Forego S. G1 (5:15 ET)
#2 Kodiak Kowboy 5/2
#10 My Pal Charlie 6/1
#1 Pyro 4/1
#5 Riley Tucker 12/1

Analysis: #2 Kodiak Kowboy looks primed for a good effort here in his third start of his current form cycle. Last out in the Vanderbilt (G2) the colt had to steady while in between runners in traffic on the far turn, was bumped in the stretch and made a mild late rally to finish third. The colt caught a main track that was playing to inside speed that day. The colt has a pair of wins over the main track here including a career top speed fig earned in winning the Amsterdam (G2) last summer. The colt owns a solid pace profile throughout with the edge in late pace numbers. I hate to go with the favorite in such a large field, but this guy looks like he is sitting on a good one here.

#10 My Pal Charlie cuts back from nine furlongs where the colt was third last out in the Cornhusker (G2) at Prairie Meadows. The runner up in that race was Shadowbdancing, who came back to win the West Virginia Governors Cup in his next start on August 1 at Mountaineer Park. The colt has run well in his last three starts going one turn despite not picking up a win. He stumbled badly coming out of the gate two back in the Met Mile (G1), making a good late run to finish fourth, beaten 1 ? lengths by the winner Bribon. The winner came back to win an optional claimer on the turf in his next start. The colt has been working quickly since his last start over the poly at Keeneland. This colt is capable with his best and he might be overlooked on the tote here.

#1 Pyro figures to be tighter for his second start off a nine-month layoff. Last out he checked in second behind #6 Gold Trippi in the Marvin. The colt was outrun after breaking a step slow, bumped with a rival at the quarter pole, and could not hang with the winner late. The colt looks more suited to more ground than seven furlongs, but hard to knock the way the barn is going at the meeting (13-7-3-0). Anything less than the 4/1 morning line is not going to offer much value on this colt.

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing
Luck to the Aztecs
2:00 a.m. September 5, 2009
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Blind Luck (8th, $20W) has formidable fillies in Mi Sueno and Necessary Evil to overcome in the Debutante, but the fact she was supplemented to the race for $10,000 means her connections think she's capable. Plus a $5 EBX combining Blind Luck, Necessary Evil and Mi Sueno. Hunch: With the Aztecs kicking off their season, let us hope Brady Hoke, Ryan Lindley or both prove to be Mr. Saturdaynight (6th, $20W) tonight against UCLA and several more times from now to December.
Yesterday ? Handicap: Lady Lumberjack (8th, $20W) ran well but was second best to a track-record performance by Carlsbad. The $2 tri key with Lady Lumberjack in the win spot over Evita Argentina, Ashley's Kitty and Carlsbad had the wrong horse on top, among other things. Hunch: Threat (5th, $10W) made a little late run to finish sixth of eight. Terrify (6th, $10W) shot to a clear lead but couldn't hold on, finishing second by four lengths. The $10 double of Threat to Terrify was done after one race.
Yesterday's loss: $62.   Bankroll: $1,567.80.

Del Mar Report
Jam-packed schedule
10 stakes races in three days means overlooking some
By Hank Wesch
Union-Tribune Staff Writer
2:00 a.m. September 5, 2009
DEL MAR ? The risk in cramming 10 stakes into a three-day holiday weekend, with one of them being the signature event of the meeting, is that some are going to be seriously overshadowed.
Even some with Grade I status.
Here's a look at the ?At risk? Grade I events that are not tomorrow's $1 million Pacific Classic. And a couple of lesser stature, but intriguing, stakes events.
?Today's $300,000, Grade I Darley Debutante, the 2-year-old filly championship of the meeting, has a field of 10. Mi Sueno is the 9-5 morning-line favorite off a victory in the Sorrento Stakes here Aug. 7 in which runner-up Necessary Evil (7-2 today) suffered her first loss in three starts by an eye-opening 6? lengths.
Eric Guillot, trainer of Mi Sueno, also has Champagne d'Oro listed, but he thinks enough of both fillies that he also entered Champagne d'Oro in Monday's Grade I, $300,000 Del Mar Futurity where she'd take on the best 2-year-old males on the grounds.
?Tomorrow's Grade I, $300,000 Pat O'Brien Stakes has a field of six, with 1-2 morning-line favorite Zensational looking for his fourth straight victory and third Grade I in a row.
Zensational is going the extra distance from the six furlongs of a Bing Crosby Handicap victory on Aug. 8 to the seven furlongs of the O'Brien. Incongruously, the O'Brien and not the Crosby is the ?Win and You're In? qualifier for the six-furlong, $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint in November at Santa Anita, Zensational's destination.
?Monday's Futurity, the 2-year-old championship of the meeting, has eight males and Champagne d'Oro on the ?to go? list. Lookin At Lucky, winner of the Futurity-prep Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 9 is the likely favorite.
If the son of Smart Strike, purchased for $475,000 in April, can overcome the inside post and handle seven furlongs, he would give trainer Bob Baffert a ninth Futurity victory.
Beyond the Grade I events, there are a couple of interesting assignments for Triple Crown series participants of 2009.
In today's fourth race, the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes, Chocolate Candy ? fifth in the Kentucky Derby ? makes his first start since finishing ninth in the Belmont Stakes on June 6.
In tomorrow's $350,000, Grade II, Del Mar Derby, Papa Clem ? fourth in the Kentucky Derby and sixth in the Preakness ? will make his first start on turf, facing eight rivals in the 1⅛-mile run.

Carlsbad sets record
Carlsbad ($4.80) set a track record of 1:14.93 for 6? furlongs on Polytrack in an impressive four-length victory in yesterday's featured $200,000, Grade III, Rancho Bernardo Handicap.
The 3-year-old, Arizona-bred filly trained by Jeff Mullins and owned by D.E. Weir, was ridden by Tyler Baze. It was Baze's return after missing two weeks with a fractured little finger of his left hand.
Carlsbad, winning for the seventh time in nine starts, led wire-to-wire and was timed in :22.99, :45.42 and 1:08.82 for the first three quarter-miles. The previous track record for 6? furlongs was 1:15.17 by Dearest Trickski on Aug. 24, 2008.
The $120,000 winner's share of the purse increased Carlsbad's earnings to $387,126.

Fatality
Madame Kiawah, a 4-year-old filly trained by Sergio Fiscal who was injured and vanned off the track after Wednesday's fifth race was euthanized, veterinarians reported yesterday.
Madame Kiawah, a winner of one of 15 career starts, fractured sesamoid bones in the right front ankle.
It was the 13th fatality of the meeting and the fourth on the Polytrack surface during afternoon racing. There have been eight fatal injuries on Polytrack during morning workout hours and one on the turf course in a race.

Closers
Jockey Rafael Bejarano was replaced on his final four scheduled mounts yesterday with an injured right thumb . . . With no Pick Six winners yesterday, the two-day carryover to start today's pool is $418,744.

&#;&#; ?
FIRST RACE ? TWIN TURBO scored gamely in a similar event in July and should be able to produce another winning late kick for the red hot Sadler barn. FRANKELSTEIN always tries hard and should enjoy a good ground-saving trip from the rail. EXCEEDING has been unlucky of late and could be a strong factor with clear sailing. Long shot: Desert Cowboy.

SECOND RACE ? DAKOTA PHONE exits Grade-I company and drops into an overnight stakes while switching to Rosario. He's won on this track in the past and should be along in time. MONZANTE has been away a long time but the works are solid and he's had success in the past over synthetics. LIMESTONE EDGE adds blinkers and could be dangerous for Baffert if cranked up for his first start since May. Long shot: Tamborim.

THIRD RACE ? SINDYFROMSANTACRUZ drops to the bottom maiden claiming ranks and doesn 3/8t have much to beat. The Mitchell-trained filly is a route to sprint play and should be on or near the lead throughout. TEN'S SALTY SALLY, a promising runner-up in her only outing, has every right to improve for Puype and is strictly the one to fear most. SISTER LUCY has some early speed and could stick around for a minor award. Long shot: Klassy Kate.

FOURTH RACE ? GRAZEN was beaten as the choice in the Swaps Stakes but gets a good spot to make amends. He's back with Gomez, who has won with him in the past. POSITION A stretches out for the first time and his pedigree suggests the mile should be within his range. LT. HOPEFUL lands the rail while trying a distance of ground for the first time and figures to insure a legitimate pace. Long shot: Singer Island.

FIFTH RACE ? CHARLIE AND CHRIS is a route to sprint, turf to polytrack play and if he can avoid trouble from the rail the Sadler-trained colt should make amends for his recent two failures as the favorite. WICKED MISCHIEF won his debut in clever style for Mitchell and should be a strong late threat right back. UNION SOLDIER broke his maiden in decent style earlier this meeting for Ellis and with a forward move should be a factor once again. Long shot: Fassnacht.

SIXTH RACE ? PULSION was nosed out in a recent sprint while flashing big improvement and his pedigree suggests he'll enjoy this two-turn trip. SLEW THE MAN ran very well in a high priced claimer in his debut and should be competitive in this straight maiden affair. TAKE A HARD LOOK is a first timer from the Baffert barn with swift drills and a good foundation. He might be a good one. Long shot: Six Eighteen.

SEVENTH RACE ? MOHAKA rallied into the teeth of slow fractions but was out finished by a neck in a similar spot last month. It was her first start since November and any kind of forward move today lands her in the winner's circle. GOOD TIME SALLY, a beaten choice in a similar spot when second last month, figures in the fray once again. BIRDIE BIRDIE has been a disappointment of late but her best lands her in the frame. Long shot: Madeline Ruby.

EIGHTH RACE ? MI SUENO was visually very impressive winning the Sorrento Stakes and a repeat performance makes her a winner right back. Her stalking style seems ideal for this extended sprint trip. NECESSARY EVIL had a troubled trip when beaten as the heavy choice in the Sorrento, but with good luck today she should make a run for it. REPO is a two-time stakes winner and will give it her best, but she 3/8s a little shy in the speed figure department. Long shot: Blind Luck.

NINTH RACE ? CRISIS OF SPIRIT is a first-timer bred for much speed and training up a storm for Baffert. In an unclassified field, she seems as good as any. STOCKINGS flashed speed before weakening in here debut and seems sure to be fitter and tougher today. CANDY'S PLEASURE is a daughter of Candy Ride from a barn whose maidens normally run better than they work. Long shot: Lost Prophet.

10TH RACE ? SOUPY is a hard knocker and should be prominent throughout with the switch to Rosario. His best is good enough. EPIC POWER drops again in class and must be considered a strong threat in this league. LANG FIELD has a recent win over this course at the level and should be on or near the lead most of the way again. Long shot: Souvenir Slew.
Best bet: Mi Sueno (8th)
