Post times were speeded up on cold, drizzly, dreary day at Belmont. Track started out fast, went to good, sealed for sixth race; called muddy but was really sloppy for last two. First four grass races stayed on turf, but finale was switched to main track after fifth race, making it an "all" in the Pick 6. This was 148th race taken off the turf this year at NYRA tracks, 43 more than highest previous total in last five years. Due to heavy rains forecast for next few days, tomorrow's scheduled feature, the Grade 3 Athenia on turf, was postponed to Wednesday.

* Horse racing bids farewell to an MVP today when Greg Gallo, one of nation's few sports editors who values his racing readership, retires from The Post. An avid handicapper himself, Gallo is still waiting for stewards to disqualify Silver Charm from 1997 Derby so he can collect his future-book bet on Captain Bodgit. In 1990, Gallo led the staff of Daily Racing Form tabloid Metro-Turf in betting unbeaten Puerto Rican wonderhorse Mister Frisky in Derby futures at 100-1; he ran eighth as a 9-5 favorite. One of Gallo's Metro-Turf innovations survives today in DRF's "A Closer Look."

FIRST RACE: Going six furlongs on inner turf, 6-1 Risky Gamble gunned to open daylight under hustling ride by Orlando Bocachica, chased by 2-1 favorite Mindbender, Cornelio Velasquez up. Mindbender bid turning for home but flattened out in stretch as 7-1 Hangingonaprayer rallied up rail under Jose Lezcano to claw past Risky Gamble in deep stretch. Then 4-1 Kevazingo, Eddie Castro up, came with rush to split horses in bold late bid, just missed catching Hangingonaprayer, who hung on to win the bob.

SECOND RACE: Quick Money, 2-year-old NY-bred son of City Zip trained by Linda Rice, set pace, ran eighth as even-money choice in his Saratoga debut, then set pace, held third as 3-2 favorite in his second start. Favored yet again at 9-5 stretching out to seven furlongs on lawn, he set pace while well in hand under Channing Hill, chased by 5-1 Jet to Classics. Around turn, Rajiv Maragh put Jet to Classics to a hard drive, with Quick Money still coasting along in front. Top of stretch, Hill finally set Quick Money down for the stretch run, but rather than drawing clear, he was hooked by Jet to Classics, who, under Maragh's aggressive handling, wore him down in long duel down the lane.

FOURTH RACE: Going mile and an eighth on inner course, 8-1 Urban Flight set pace tracked by 5-2 Separatist, who launched his bid around far turn to take lead top of stretch, but he was run down late by 5-1 Missinglisalewis rallying outside. Hingingbyathread, older half-brother of first-race winner Hangingonaprayer, favored at 8-5, tried to split Separatist and Urban Flight while rallying in midstretch under Cornelio Velasquez, ran into blind switch and had to check out of there, came on again for third; might have been best.

FIFTH RACE: Going seven furlongs on turf, 7-2 Compliance Officer set pace under Rajiv Maragh, pressed by 9-1 Onzain, chased outside by 6-1 Cash'n in Dixie, coming off convincing score in debut on Saratoga grass. Down stretch, Cash'n in Dixie put in determined late run under Javier Castellano but just fell short of catching Compliance Officer, who was making his first start since Aug. 22 for Terri Pompay. Woodrunner, Cornelio Velasquez up, rallied turning for home, but once again it was too little, too late, and he settled for third; his seventh 2-3 finish with just one win from 13 starts.
