HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $45,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Alice - 5-YO mare has only one career start 6-months ago; she is bred to be any kind and should come back strong.

Susan's Wildcat - Tepid chalk in a wide open MSW; many of these are long in the tooth, but one has to graduate.

Long Shot - Ermine Slippers

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $15,000, Maiden claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up

Tale the Truth - Nice return off a 10-month hiatus; trouble if he improves even one step facing these.

Justice Reigns - A bit long in the tooth, but he runs fast enough to compete; facing his friends tonight.

Long Shot - Best Plan

Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $49,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up

Dance With Gable - If this race stays on the hill, this guy is lone speed; will like the turf rail out 15 feet.

Gothic Samurai - Like the turn back in distance from route to sprint; suspect his best stride will come late.

Long Shot - T. D. Vance

Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

Screaming Destiny - Did a classic pop and stop in debut; key for me is the vote of Rafael Bejarano, a leap of faith.

Reprise - FTS from Carla Gaines gets the services of Joel Rosario; your edge is being able to see the tote board.

Long Shot - Metrology

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $24,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 4-year-olds and up

John Eli - His last race, first for a price tag, is more like it; Ron McAnally hasn't forgotten how to train either.

Red Door Drive - Hasn't missed a paycheck since running for a price tag; Bob Baffert cull has proven a useful sort.

Long Shot - Wolfgang

Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $44,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds

Big Man Has a Sign - Exits a live MSW race 2-months ago; Julio Canani babies will improve with experience, expect better.

Imperial Pride - Took betting in debut albeit a 6-horse field; ran evenly for second and can be taken to improve.

Long Shot - Tiz a Knight

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $46,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Seeking the Queen - Will be overlooked as a beaten chalk in the California Oaks; big trainer switch to Paddy Gallagher.

Pink Blossom - Bullet fast MSW win for Bruce Headley; we know he's quick and fast, but can he eventually rate.

Long Shot - Church Camp

Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $11,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Sports Edition - Ran like she needed the race, her first in a year; little improvement puts her into the hunt.

Recess - Tepid favorite in a wide open affair; claimed by Caesar Dominguez, he fits well in this class.

Long Shot - Paloma's Flight

Best Bet - Seeking the Queen (race 7)

Santa Anita Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/2/$7.20; Long Shots, 8/3/$22.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.80

Santa Anita Totals - 487/126/$797.80; Long Shots, 245/38/$404.40; Best Bets, 30/12/$58.20

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #5 Warrior's Reward (7/2) in race 8 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Mahvelous Bert won at Tampa Bay paying $4.20 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.80 to show. Stats - 30/20/$139.50
