Collapse Coming for UNLV
by Ryan Stetson
The UNLV Rebels don't like playing with each other, can't run a set offense, and don't have much of a chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament.
"There's no chemistry," Odartey Blankson told reporters after UNLV fell to Utah last week. "Guys don't like playing with each other. We're not taking advantage of matchups. We don't have no roles. We have five guys just playing. We don't have no fundamentals, no nothing. It's just sad, real sad."
On the heels of that loss, UNLV took a 94-60 beating from Missouri as a 9-point dog on Sunday. Despite playing with just four reserves, Mizzou jumped out to score on 21 of 22 possessions in the first half.
UNLV continued to sleepwalk through the second frame, falling behind by as much as 38 points at one point, and finished shooting less than 39 percent from the floor.
"No one likes to get beat," coach Charlie Spoonhour told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "What happened Sunday was the worst of both worlds. But we can't dwell on the past. We've got six conference games and the conference tournament to build on."
Over their current three-game slide on the road, the Rebels are dropping just 59 points while allowing about 76 per outing. The slump has dropped UNLV to 12-9 straight up (SU) and 10-8 against the spread (ATS).
The only thing the Rebels have going for them against San Diego State on Tuesday is that they will be on home court. The Aztecs beat UNLV 83-78 last month in San Diego with the Rebels listed as a 4-point dog.
This time around, oddsmakers have the Rebels posted as 4 1/2-point favorites. The Aztecs head into the game having lost five of the last six SU and ATS.
The total is set at 147 1/2 for the tonight's game.
I'm definitely playing San Diego State after reading this story! The public is all over UNLV, and the line has dropped from 5.5 to 4.5. Will probably play the moneyline too.
Good luck!
