The concrete would be free! But the water needed to mix it would be $100,000. That probably sums up pretty well how our current government works.

But all they'd tell you is that the Concrete was free so vote for it!

thanks mr mags:toast:

Scott, let me see if I get this right... you want to get fraud and corruption out of healthcare... and to do that, you want the government to run it??? :mj07:

My God, think of what you are asking..... The government can't do anything without waste, fraud and corruption. Take a look how well Medicare (which is what our health system will look) is funded - oh yea, and check out how well Social Security is funded.
...........................................................

Here is the deal. They could hire me to be in charge of fraud , medicare, soc sec , all of it.

Pay me .05% of the fraud I find, save , and stop.

I would be a millionaire like some of the dirty 237 Congressmen.

So the question is, If I can do it . ............

You'd be a rich man... AND paying an additional 5.4% of your income to pay for other people's healthcare.......

Not a bad tradeoff, in that situation....

Scott:

Actually I believe (and many other sources do also) that premium rates will go up rather substantially, beginning in 2013.

Most insurers will write as much "healthy" business as they can prior to 2013. The people entering the system then will be in much poorer health, on average, and will drive up costs exponentially.

The argument that is made is that "we are paying for those folks already in the ER". That part is true - those folks' costs are shifted to the private insurance market. However, those same people will clearly utilize the Docs and prescription drugs that they did not have access to previously.

And as far as insurance companies screwing customers with their high rates? While I understand it is easy to pick on the big bad insurers, it seems to me that a 2.2% profit margin (which the industry had last year) doesn't seem unfair to me?

Now those beverage makers - which have a much higher profit margin (as do software companies, etc - actually 34 other industries in the US) - THOSE are the companies that we need government to take over.

In fact, I'd be in favor of the government taking over EVERY industry and taking out the profit component - so it would be cheaper for us.

That would be so cool! Imagine gasoline for $1.00 per gallon. How about Beer for $0.50 a six-pack!

YES! :mj06:
Your Making waaaay too much sense here for most Mags :)

If given time to break down this massive amount of legislation and give folks opportunity to digest it--it won't float.

However if they use the the urgent have to pass today ploy like they did on stimulus--they might slide anything by.

Remember the stimulus plan--If we don't pass this plan right now--unemployment could reach 8% by end of year :SIB

Lets see from Obie's own site what the priority of spendind on STIMULUS has been--

Ovehttp://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspxrview of Funding

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 distributes the $787 billion as follows:
chart_FundingOverview.jpg
Updated 10/30/2009
Source for Distributing and Reporting: US Treasury, Federal Agency Financial and Activity Reports

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Pretty good job on those entitlements--wonder how many jobs they produced other than more gov employees to distibute them.

Somehow I see little change from the ole liberal tax/spend/regulate/--larger government -with exception it is on a unprecedented scale and at a time in history we can least afford it. As they say--
"never let a good crisis go to waste" :nooo:

I get the way they have been screwing us for 30 years.

not one President got close to passing reform.

Scott:

I assume by "reform", you mean insurance reform, not healthcare reform, correct?

Regarding insurance reform, there have been plenty of reforms enacted by states throughout history. I can point to one you may have heard of:

HIPAA: This monumental legislation GUARANTEED that individual insured's could not be cancelled due to their individual health status, and provided numerous protections of the individual, such as privacy of medical records and conditions.

I'd say that is reform.

My opinion - we need HEALTH reform more than INSURANCE reform. Certainly the current system does need some changes. Access to healthcare needs to be available to all. However, I don't agree that the DEM's plan is the way to do it, that's all.

HEALTH reform - we need to incent people to lead healthier lifestyles - and the only way to do it is to do so financially.

I found it humorous that "O" said it is OK to charge more for tobacco use, as that is a lifestyle issue. However, the segment that will cost us the most in the long run, and one that is growing day by day (forgive the pun) is OBESITY and being overweight.

We should charge premiums with respect to either 1) maintaining an appropriate body weight if one has such already, or 2) provide discounts if one who is obsese shows progress in reducing weight over a given year. Conversely, if someone adds weight (BMI) or if they are already obese, do not show progress, then they should pay more. If we are subsidizing people for healthcare, then those same folks (actually all of us) bear a reciprocal responsibility to do what we can to keep overall costs down. Body weight is something we all can control (with a few noted exceptional conditions) - it's just that many of us choose not to.

Obesity costs will continue to worsen and will easily dwarf tobacco related illnesses.

Why didn't "O" endorse this approach, while still going after smokers? He is a smart man - he knows tobacco users are only 15% of the population (read voters). However, stats show that well over 50% of the American public are overweight.

But if we are talking reform, the emphasis should be on controlling costs. And as much as you like to pick on the insurance industry, the real cost drivers are us - and the unhealthy lifestyles that we lead in this country.

That is where the focus should be. That would save costs. Having the government run the system will not save costs. It will actually increase them and shift them. Another entitlement program that we don't need.

And what are entitlement programs? Nothing more than forced charity. It sure would be nice if we all could decide what to do with those dollars - I believe strongly in charity - and I'd love to have those entitlement dollars that are stolen from me and allow me, as the income earner, to decide what and who that money should go to.

Seems like that should be my right since I earned the money, doesn't it???

Ok, this got long and all over the place. Done now. Have a good day!

I apologize. I had assumed that you were capable of having an intelligent discussion about the issues without the bad language and making it a partisan issue. You clearly have a strong opinion without a strong understanding of the industry - or healthcare in general. I understand - it would be the same thing if I would complain about, say, the auto industry or the gas/oil industry. From the outside looking in, it always looks like people are getting ripped off. Of course, the phrase "walk a mile in their shoes" typically applies. I had thought this would be an interesting, intellectual discussion. I was wrong.

I'll refrain from responding to your posts in the future. I have no interest in getting into the heated debates, the mudslinging, the bad language, etc that has been prevalent in these forums. Just not my thing, I guess.

You seem to not be a happy person - with a lot of negativity. I really hope things go better for you in the future. Have a good day.
