Ok I was watching the NEC golf today, and some of the tee shots these guys are hitting now are CRAZY. I mean look at Stuart Applebys average driving distance this week.

Round 1-345.5
Round 2- 352.5
Round 3-358.5

:scared :mj03:
And not to mention on hole I think 16 he hit it 427 :scared :scared :scared . Now this guy isnt even that big what the FAWK. They have to slow the golf ball down or in 5 years every single course will be obsolete, this is just nuts.

16th Hole at Firestone C.C

No. 16 (667 yards, par 5)

The 16th is the signature hole at Firestone. The extension of the tee now brings the bunkers into play, which are approximately 280 to 290 yards off the tee. A long iron second shot down the hill must avoid a creek on the right and stay short of the pond that guards this small green. The front right pin is the most challenging.

Appleby hits a 427 yard drive and flies a 7 wood on the green over the lake and sticks it for an easy 2 putt birdie :scared That is fukced up.

I saw that today. I was suprised to see that he was carrying a 7 wood too.

Seems like a lot of the pros are carrying these 7 and 9 woods now.

Agent, do you ever carry one of those "baffler" clubs when you play?

That hole was playing dry and downwind until the rains last night and also plays straight downhil - with a landing area at 280 or so the slopes even more downhilll. Not saying that makes it easy, but take a guy that can hit it 330 or so under those conditions

But I guess these days, it doesnt really have to do with how big the guys are, I mean look at a guy like Charles Howell III, 155-160 soaking wet, hits it over 300 with ease. The equipment sure makes it easier though.

Yes I think not only the equipment, namely the ball but also the drivers and shafts but course maintenence plays a huge role also. These fairways are running like a 9 or 10 on the stimpmeter which I would guess is faster than 95% of your home course greens.

6-5 to answer your question, yes I carry what is known as a Hybrid club. It is my FAVORITE club in my bag and I almost never hit a bad shot with it. It is a 3 iron loft of 20 degrees but has a baffler type head and no hosel. Cuts throught the rough like a knife. I hit it from 200-245 depending on the situation. It gos so high and soft. MUCH easier than hitting a long iron.

My index is a 5.9 right now, and I carried two hybrids most of the year. Why try to hit a 2 iron when a hybrid is so easy to hit? Just no need, and you see most pros carrying them now. Only reason most golfers insist on carrying those is plain and simple EGO - thinking they should be able to hit a 2 or 3 iron even though they still cant break 100.

Exxxxxactly. I carry a 0.6 handicap. I hit my Hybrid 9 times and all 9 were exactly the shot I was trying to hit. Nothing like a high soft shot from 240 into a par 5. I also use it for chip/putting through the fringe or any type of chipping areas. Once you get a feel for that its almost like cheating. You watch other guys try to chip or putt it within 5 feet and you are trying to make it.

I hit a buddy's cobra baffler 3/20, and hit it well every time. What other club makers make a club like this? Any recommendations?

also, is there a website where you can see what the pros are carrying? WOuld be interesting.

Well I play a Callaway, but Taylor Made just came out with some Hybrids that have the screws like the R7 driver. If you dont know what Im talking about its unreal. Screws you can take out and adjust for YOUR swing. It completely changes the center of gravity of the club. AMAZING. I would look into those for sure. Also I think the Golf Channel. com does an in the bag thing on different tour winners every week but not sure if they have any saved from previous weeks. You cant buy what those guys are hitting anyway trust me. Its all tweaked and tinkered and much better than the inconsistent JUNK they put on the shelves for Joe 6 pack.

Each week, The Golf Channel reviews players' bags and lets you know what equipment they used to win their event.

This Week's Bag Checks:
Mikael Lundberg - Cadillac Russian Open (2005)
Phil Mickelson - PGA Championship (2005)

Search Archived Bag Checks

Note: We pride ourselves on supplying the most accurate information available for our "What's in the Bag?" feature. To ensure this accuracy, we contact agents and manufacturers to verify what equipment was used on the final day of a player's victory. All information is compiled by The Golf Channel News Department.

confusing. I did some searches, and I'm not sure what I need. Would like to have something to replace a 3 iron. I assumed that's what that cobra baffler I hit was? what's the heavenwood?

You need what I have, its a Hybrid with 20 degrees of loft. This is what I have, it has a 3 on it as in 3 iron.
