The committe decides who they feel are the worst two teams of the 65 and they play for the final spot. I think it is a stupid idea. Why not have all #16 seeds decided like this. If 64 teams is not enough, then how is 65?

It sounds like the Democrats are running the NCAA now!--just kidding.

Both the teams in the play-in game won their respective conference tourneys, and therefore got an automatic bid, so they didn't get chosen totally at random.

I believe the playin game came up when a new conference was added or something liek that, they added the game instead of cutting an at large berth, i will look into it.

UNC-Ashville won the Big South
Texas Southern won the SWAC

When the MWC and the WAC split, there became 31 automatics, and none of the conferences majors or middies wanted to give up that extra at large.

Found that somewhere else, that's where the playin game comes from.
