Government cheese is processed cheese that was provided to welfare, Food Stamp recipients and the elderly receiving Social Security in the United States, and is still provided to food charities. The processed cheese was used in military kitchens since World War II and in schools since as early as the 1960s.

I see many of you like this Mac and Cheese. Here in the Detroit area that's what we feed our homeless.

What is the point of this thread? I ask because it isn't funny, informative or interesting, so assuming there is an inside joke or hidden reference that I am missing. TIA

Perhaps more importantly, any type of cheese can be problematic for the digestive systems of millions of Americans. According to the University of Georgia, 75 percent of African-Americans, 51 percent of Latinos, and 80 percent of Asian-Americans are lactose-intolerant, versus the 21 percent of Caucasians. And because minorities historically have been heavily represented in welfare programs, the government wasn?t really doing Americans? butts a favor. A choice excerpt from the Wayans brothers? early 90s sketch comedy show, In Living Color, reimagines archetypal television family the Bunkers as black:

Archie: Edith! What?s for dinner?

Edith: Oh, Archie, it?s your favorite! Macaroni and the government cheese!

Archie: Aw, geez, Edith! You know what the government cheese does to me! I spend more time on the throne than Queen Latifah!

Mac & Cheese kept my belly full during some lean times in the 60's, I use to get 10 boxes for $ 1.00 for a treat I would mix in a can of stewed tomatoes . Boy's what do you really know what the homeless eat ? You must of read about it in your cigar bar joint. Why don't you ask the homeless in Royal Oak which you may or may not know is heavily populated. Never can have enough good info.

When my dad passed in the '67 mom wasn't too proud to ask to for help raising her 3 kids. She worked two jobs in the sardine factories to keep a roof over our heads....Block cheese was a staple in our fridge as was Government Can Food, chicken/beef....She also grew veggies and canned the fall, dug Dandelion Greens in the Spring.....We also had fish & lobster many a night, back then they practically gave the stuff away....

In those days you busted your ass and worked extra to get off the program, now a days it's seems to be a way of life for many.....

I'd rather ask the homeless in Birmingham and Bloomfield. They have a better class of homeless there. :SIB

I don't know about the homeless in B'ham & Blfd. but I do know that it's the home of many dead-beats that have stuck us over the years.
