Or are you saving at all? From time to time this question comes up at work and I think it may be time to bring in a consultant for the guys who work for me as I'm concerned they don't take retirement saving seriously enough.

Or am I paranoid about saving too much? I dunno. I don't need you to divulge personal information that you don't want to, but are you saving for retirement? Do you save a certain amount each year or a percentage of your paycheck? 401K or Roth? Planning on social security taking care of everything to maybe you have a good pension deal? Maybe a little of everything?

For me, we still have a pension where I work and a 401K with 50% match. I put 8% of my pretax earnings into retirement saving and 'HOPE' that's enough.

You?

22% into my 401k (it ends up being maxed out by the end of the year)and I max out my roth

also have a pension (which they stopped offering to anyone hired after 2005)

I am 37 right now and I plan on being out of there @ 52

It amazes me how little people know/pay attention to their retirement accounts. I try to talk to all the new chemists we hire and encourage them to start saving now as opposed to later.

This is actually my point and you said it better/simpler than I did.

I am surprised at how many people I work with or know outside of work say they are gonna worry about it after they pay off the bills they have.

Yikes....

Did not take saving for retirement seriously when I was younger. Good thing, in 1999 I went through the big D.....

14 years later.....

Your 401k provider should be doing this annually and HR should have some literature to share with them.

Take a field trip to the local state run facility.....maybe a run through Allentown....but people are going to save what they will. I've seen 5% matches go unused

They do, but I guess it's just not getting through to them.

Maybe I need a more creative idea to get their attention than another training class type of meeting.

find an employee who is doing well with saving and 401k as an advocate for the program to speak to people "privately" about contributing. I did this and now have 92% participation. :0074

not enough and NOT SOON enough, so learn from me
5-6 years away from my last paycheck

401K

6% WITH 3% Match, going to 8% next year (debt retired by end of year) and will bump 2% each year there after, match is maxed already

IRA
2,000 a year going in, it will be chump change at retirement maybe enough to kill my last debt or buy a good car for retirement

have a small pension coming from divorce settlement when she retires, I figure less than $400 a month

and finally Social in-Security which will be 60+ percent of my total retirement income (I HOPE)

I plan on retiring and taking a year or two of relaxation and some travel then going back to work part time for a maybe 4 years. I am still looking into that social security offset for factoring this.

Pocket - as you get closer to retirement - move it out of stocks/stock funds and into more conservative investments. Long term obviously stocks are your best choice - but you have to make changes as you go

Wow, 92% is a healthy number. Nice work. Are you available to speak to my group?
