as a former papa John driver... I willsay --- pizza delivery guys aint hurting for money.
I was clearing about 23-25 an hour and that was delivering to college kids and middle class america.
most pizza drivers will get an hourly wage of $5 or 6/hr.
Then, we got 5% of our total order for the night. so if we delivered 500$ worth of pizzas that night, we got $25.00 which was supposed to cover gas/maintenance.

then tack tips on top of it. most people tipped the spare change and a dollar or 2. If it was a bigger order (3 or more pizzas) i could expect a 5-8$tip.
When I turned on the charm, I could get between 4 and 8 from housewives/moms.

I delivered for several years also. I generally got between 2 or 3 dollars on an order. I found that most people don't tip a percentage on delivery orders. I got a couple bucks wether I was bringing a small pizza to one guy or 10 pizza's to a party. I can say that there is a strong correlation between the amount tipped and the time it takes to get the food there. Marine is right on that middle age ladies tip the best.

Thanks VaNurse. I just crawled out of bed and turned on the computer.

7-Up and water is all I can manage. Not sure when I'll eat something but I'm sure toast and maybe some poached eggs will be in order.

Back to bed.

Thanks again VaNurse.

Just curious, since I have been involved in the business...

How much do you tip the pizza delivery driver on a $20.00 order, assuming your pizza is on time or not much later then the quoted time on the phone...

I'll give me opinion after I hear from a few people...

Hope you're not an Owner and will be cutting their wages..... :nono:

Ordering one now....Double Cheese/Olives/Anchoives/Onions

It depends if they charge for delivery or not. If I have to pay-$2-3 for delivery, then the guy usually will get a buck and the change, otherwise, they usually get between $3-5

More involved;

Thought about opening a Papa Johns franchise with a few people, they have more money to back it, so I would handle the managing of the store (though not the manger of the store if that makes sense). I started working at a Papa Johns in between jobs and school 6 months ago as a driver along with a clerking job at a law firm to get a better handle on Papa Johns...

$250K investment, paybacks average from just under two years to as quick as 10 months :scared

I worked as a driver for another pizza place in college, so I knew the routine...

Marine, they give us 6.5-8.5% of the total sales depending on your number of deliveries and whether or not you close that night.

They also charge $1.00 for delivery, however the driver gets NONE of that, I guess that is how they (Papa Johns) at least break even on the percentage number.

I agree drivers can make a lot of money, IF they work a lot of hours, one guy at my store has been there for 13 years and works 60-80 hours a week at two different stores combined...He says that he has thought of quitting several times, but that he makes around 70-80K a year, his wife doesn't have to work...So

I just work there mostly weekends, but I have found a few universal things about delivering pizza (I AM ASSURED THIS WILL OFFEND SOME, BUT IT IS THE TRUTH):

1. 8 out of 10 black people don't tip.
2. Mexican people tip the best out of all races.
3. Drunk people are the biggest tippers of all.
4. The average tipper gives around $2.50 on an order totaling $15-$25. (which is why I used $20 as an example).
5. Drivers make minimum wage or close to it without tips.
6. Drivers definitely take orders out first that they know a good tip is coming to them.
7. Drivers take orders last that they know are a "STIFF". :sadwave:

Thanks for giving your answers/opinions, its good to know that there are a lot of good customers out there still!!

Considering prob most tax free that 70K would equate to much more--

Whats worse food poisoning or disentary from drinking contaminated water--had the latter and no fun.

Funny story--but wasn't at the time.
was in hurry and made mistake of brushing teeth with tap water in China--by time I got to Phillppines was deathly ill and spent biggest part of flight in the john. Was moving very gingerly but when waiting for luggage on carrosal a little lady was trying to retrieve large bad and it was dragging her along side carrosal--I instintively grab bag for her and in doing so strained and loaded my pants up.
People in airport were cordial as I headed for nearest john and parted like the red sea as they held their noses :)
