how to determine what car to buy

So my car was totaled and I am getting 10k for a replacement. I did not have a car payment (and would prefer not to have one right now). I am looking to purchased a used car, but, I have no clue what I want...or even where to start to determine what I want. All I know is that I want something under $10,000

I have always leased cars until I had this one, so I have never purchased a used car. I work for a company that gets supplier discounts for the big 3, but I am not sure that matters on a used car.

Here are my requirements, as you can see it doesn't really narrow down the field

4 doors
automatic
decent gas mileage
under 10k
needs to be semi-safe be able to handle winter conditions. I have 2 little one's but most of time they are in the wife's car

I don't care about thrills, we have a family car that we do all of our travelling in, I just need a car that gets me to/from work (20 Miles a day - all freeway)

What are good sites to check/compare used cars?
