Wake Forest assistant basketball coach Jamill Jones, 35, surrendered to the police Thursday in New York after he was charged in connection with the death of a man who mistook Jones?s car for his Uber ride, reports say.

Citing police, NBC New York reports that Jones attacked Sandor Szabo around 1:15 a.m. Sunday in Queens, after Szabo knocked on Jones?s car window, thinking it was his Uber. ​

The Associated Press writes:

A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Szabo may have been drunkenly knocking on car windows before Jones allegedly confronted him. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not allowed to speak publicly.
The coach got out, followed Szabo to the sidewalk, clocked him and sped off, police said. Szabo never regained consciousness and was taken off life support Tuesday.

The blow reportedly caused Szabo, also 35, to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk. Jones was charged with third-degree assault. On Thursday night, Jones pleaded not guilty and was released. His next court date is set for Oct. 2. Szabo was a ?digital marketing guru? from Boca Raton, Fla., who was in New York for his stepsister?s wedding.In a statement to ESPN, Jones?s attorney said:

?It?s an unfortunate and tragic incident. Mr. Jones and his family, their deepest condolences go out to the Szabo family. We simply hope that the public gives Mr. Jones an opportunity to litigate this matter in the court and not in the press.?

A Wake Forest spokesperson released a statement on Twitter declining to comment on the particulars of the case.

Sad situation. Maybe not in this case but until we bring capital punishment to the country I am afraid its only going to get worse. I see murderers getting 10 years while marijuana possession is getting 35 years. I don't get it.

Jones allegedly punched the late tourist, identified as Sandor Szabo, early Sunday after he was being disruptive and banging on cars in Long Island City. The incident came after Szabo punched a resident who came outside amid the ruckus, according to The Post, which led Jones to act. Szabo later died in the hospital after Jones' punch caused him to hit his head on the pavement.

Sad thing is the coach has to know better unless he was defending his life. Media is going to have a field day with this one not to mention the black/white issue. Either way going to be a long rough trip for families of all involved.

I don't understand why he left the scene. Sounds to me like he was helping somebody that got punched out. Leaving the scene was a bad move. :nono:
