Hoyas and Orangemen in Big East Battle

This is one of the storied rivalries from the Big East and it plays on in upstate New York. For Georgetown (15-3, 8-6 ATS), patience is truly a virtue. The Hoyas are at their best when the offense runs thru center Greg Monroe. The sophomore has displayed an acute awareness of how to play the game since arriving on campus and besides his ability to score, rebound and play defense, he has the knack of finding open shooters.

He?s contributed assists to Austin Freeman and Chris Wright when they had career games this season. To the chagrin of backers, Monroe and mates are 5-10-1 ATS in January games over the last two seasons.

Syracuse (19-1, 12-4 ATS) hosted maddening Marquette on Saturday holding them off 76-71 as 8.5-point favorites and have quick turnaround for this battle. Besides the surprise element this team has produced, the Orangemen have been remarkably consistent, with very few valleys for coach Jim Boeheim. Wes Johnson has been a big reason for this, providing double-double?s most nights or close to it. Rick Jackson and Arinze Onuaku both do excellent work on the low boxes, which frees up visual lanes for shooters like Andy Rautins. In spite of distinguished record at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse is 13-23 ATS at home facing teams with win percentage of 80 or higher.

Sportsbook.com opened the Orangemen as six-point favorites with total of 146 and Syracuse has covered 12 of its last 16 home games. The Orangemen are the best shooting team in the country at 53.4 percent and drain 38.9 percent from beyond the three point line. This Syracuse club is more athletic and does an outstanding job in its 2-3 zone limiting teams to 37.6 percent from the field and is 10-4 ATS this season off a victory.

Georgetown is no slouch offensively, converting on 49.7 percent from the field and nailing 39.9 percent behind the arc. They shot 63 percent Saturday against Rutgers in 88-63 rout as 19.5-point home favorites, which was their fifth highest shooting percentage in 13 years. The Hoyas get the job done with greater effectiveness if Wright is scoring, since they don?t have a number of dependable scorers like the Orange.

Monday night brings out different variables for both teams, with G-Town 4-10 against the spread on this day of the week. They Hoyas are 6-1 UNDER on Monday?s while Syracuse is 8-3 UNDER, making the total worth noting.

The Orangemen are 8-1 and 6-3 ATS in previous nine home outings against G-Town.

This Big East bash begins at 7 Eastern on ESPN.

The Carrier Dome is always a tough place to visit, and that's especially been the case for Georgetown in recent years.

The 12th-ranked Hoyas look to end their five-game slide in the dome Monday night when they meet No. 5 Syracuse, which is seeking a seventh straight win.

Syracuse (19-1, 6-1 Big East) has won 10 of the last 11 home meetings with Georgetown (15-3, 6-2). The Orange's 98-94 overtime victory over the Hoyas on Feb. 14 drew 31,841 fans to the Carrier Dome, and a similar crowd is expected Monday.

"We have great fans here in Syracuse," forward Kris Joseph said. "Our fans are die-hard fans and I think them being here and being so loud helps us a lot. I think it scares a lot of teams."

The home team has won the last seven meetings, not including a 58-57 victory for the Hoyas in the 2006 Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden. Georgetown guard Austin Freeman scored 19 points in each game as the teams split two in 2008-09.

The Orange continued their winning ways Saturday with a 76-71 home victory over Marquette. Syracuse pulled away from a 34-all halftime tie to build a lead as big as 16 before holding on.

"We knew we had a big size advantage and I thought we really exploited that," coach Jim Boeheim said. "We played probably the best basketball, defensively and offensively, we've played all year, for those (first) 16 minutes in the second half."

Syracuse won't have a size advantage when it uses its 2-3 zone to try to contain 6-foot-11 center Greg Monroe. The Georgetown big man, averaging 21.0 points and 13.7 rebounds in his last three games, made 10 of 12 shots and had 21 points and 11 boards in an 88-63 rout of Rutgers on Saturday.

Monroe averaged 13.0 points and 9.0 rebounds against Syracuse last season.

Georgetown's lack of depth has been an issue all season, and Saturday's lopsided game gave coach John Thompson III a chance to use a bench that has played sparingly in Big East contests. Vee Sanford and Henry Sims became the third and fourth Hoyas subs to score in a conference game this season.

"We were focused for the most part," Thompson said. "They came out with a cohesiveness and an energy which was a good for us. That's something we've stressed that we want to maintain."

The Orange will have to be wary of Chris Wright, who scored 27 points in a 74-66 win at No. 9 Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Wright has excelled in Big East road games against Top 25 teams, averaging 17.0 points on 54.2 percent shooting in seven contests.

Syracuse showcased its depth Saturday, winning despite getting no points from second-leading scorer Andy Rautins. Wesley Johnson had 22 points and 15 rebounds while Joseph added 14 and 11 off the bench.

The Orange have five players who average at least 10 points.

"That just shows how good of a basketball team we are," Joseph said. "Andy being shut down today was a great thing to see, because now we know what everyone else is capable of."

Georgetown Hoyas at Syracuse Orange (-5.5, 147.5)

Inside battle

One might think that in Monday?s key matchup will be a battle between Hoyas center Greg Monroe and Orange center Arinze Onuaku. However, Monroe is not a traditional center, often working away from the basket, driving the lane and delivering crisp passes to open players.

Instead of Monroe, Onuaku will likely be matched up against the burly and more traditional post player, Julian Vaughn. Vaughn is arguably the most improved player on the Hoyas team, providing a presence in the post that the team struggled with last season. Because of his improvement, Georgetown is one of the Top 10 teams in the country.

Against Marquette Saturday, Syracuse outscored Marquette 56-22 in the paint and held a 46-to-21 advantage on the boards. Syracuse will need to be dominant against Georgetown if it hopes to improve to 7-1 in Big East play.

?We did a great job of executing the high-low,? Syracuse guard Andy Rautins told the Syracuse Post Standard after the win over Marquette. ?We did a better job of half-court offense than we have all season in the first 15 minutes of the second half.?

Best starting five?

Georgetown might have the thinnest bench in the conference, but it could boast the best starting five in the country.

It seems that on any given night, a new Georgetown starter is erupting to lead the team. In a win over Connecticut, guard Austin Freeman scored 33 points. In a loss to Villanova on Jan. 17, Greg Monroe scored 29 points. On Jan. 20, Chris Wright scored 27 points en route to a win over Pittsburgh. Having so many scoring options provides matchup nightmares for opposing teams.

In a win over Rutgers Saturday, each of the five starters contributed, with four of the five scoring in double figures. Greg Monroe led the way with 21 points, 14 rebounds and continued to show his skills as the best passing big man in the country with six assists.

"It was basically taking high-percentage shots. I was getting the ball in position where I was getting easy shots. It wasn't anything I was doing in particular,? Monroe, who was 10-of-12 from the field including a 3-pointer, told the Washington Post.

Maintaining the lead

On Saturday, Syracuse led Marquette 70-53 with less than four minutes remaining. However, Marquette stormed back to cut the lead to five with just over a minute left.

?I think we lose our poise,? forward Wes Johnson told the told the Syracuse Post Standard. ?We think just because there?s two minutes left on the clock and we?re up by double-figures that the game is over. We?ve gotta finish the whole 40 minutes and not 38.?

This has been a growing trend in Big East play, with teams down big coming back. Georgetown was down 15 points to Connecticut at halftime before coming back to win by three. Villanova was down 17 points to Louisville earlier in the season before pushing back to get an eight-point win.

Watch the fouls

If Georgetown has a weakness, it is foul trouble. In Georgetown?s loss to Villanova on Jan. 17, Chris Wright found himself in foul trouble and was on the bench for most of the game. Wright finished with six points in the Hoyas' five-point loss.

Forward Julian Vaughn fouled out against Villanova and played just 17 minutes. Without Wright and Vaughn on the floor, coach John Thompson III was forced to play inexperienced freshmen Hollis Thompson, Vee Sanford and Jerrelle Benimon. The three combined to go 1-of-12 from the field.

Benimon has been able to provide some solid minutes for the Hoyas, showing an ability to get to loose balls and grab critical rebound.

"Jerrelle goes up there really hard," forward Julian Vaughn told the Washington Post. "[It's] his niche, it's his thing. He loves to do it."

Georgetown is 7-19 ATS in its last 26 Big East Conference games. Georgetown is 5-2 ATS in its last seven road games. The over is 5-0 in Georgetown?s last five.
