Hey fellas!

Just wondering if this is a good deal or not. My GF is pushing me to purchase a new laptop. My current one is almost 10 yrs old - but, I don't want to get rid of it for sentimental and ethical reasons. Anyway, she's right and I do desperately need a new one!

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Peace! :)

I'm not a huge fan of HP's or AMD's mid range processors but you'll be happy with a Terrabyte and 8 gigs of Ram

Windows 8 will be a learning curve.

With an HDMI port you can connect your laptop to an HDTV for display

Price wise it's pretty good and processors are fast enough that anything you get will be speed of light fast compared to a 10 year old computer - I don't think you'll be disappointed with that computer

1 big perk is the "Beats Audio technology"
I setup a computer that had the Beats Audio and it kicked ass. Best I had ever heard out of a laptop. If you ever play music straight off your computer this would be enough to sway me.

Good Luck - If you do get it, let me know how you like it after a month or so

I'm a fan of Toshiba's - Here's a few that are comparable to the HP you posted
They have Intel processors (Look for i5's and up) and between 750 GB - 1 TB

$620
Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 - Core i7 2.4 GHz - 750 GB HDD / 5400 rpm - 15.6″ 1366 x 768 - 8 GB RAM - US - Ice blue brushed aluminium, black keyboard
https://www.google.com/shopping/pro...=X&ei=8eVRUdWCIuLF2AWvmYCQCg&ved=0CKYBEPMCMAA

$668
Toshiba - Windows OS - 15.6 inch - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB disk - Intel CPU - 1.8 GHz CPU - Intel GPU - With Built-in Camera - Touchpad
https://www.google.com/shopping/pro...=X&ei=8eVRUdWCIuLF2AWvmYCQCg&ved=0CLoBEPMCMAE

$681
Toshiba - Windows OS - 15.6 inch - 8 GB RAM - 750 GB disk - Intel CPU - 2.3 GHz CPU - With Built-in Camera
With Windows 7

Josh - thanks for the feedback! :)

Went to 3 stores and none had Toshibas. Maybe they don't sell many here in Canada - and one of the stores was a Best Buy. Either that or I simply missed them altogether.

Anyway, ended up picking up a Lenovo Ideapad for $569.99. The kicker is that it's got an i7 chip! I also tested out the sound system in store and it was good enough for me. It even says dolby home theater, so I'm pretty happy! LOL

I'm setting it up now as I type this on my old one....wooooohooooooo!!! LOL

kick - I have issues with Macs and Apple in general.

Spartan - I need to be able to save my research on here, so I don't think a tablet's the way to go. GF has an iPad and we just use it to play games! LOL

Peace! :)

This my real Job- HP -there consumer stuff is pretty poor- screens are of quality- MOTHERBOARD ARE A HUGE ISSUE.

ASUS KING OF THE HILL, pERIOD FOR ReLIABILITY. Microsoft of Motherboards- really well built. Samsung -high quality components- AMD ARE A LITTLE SLOW -BUT STAY VERY COOL AND ARE VERY STABLE.- ASUS IS THE FERRARI OF ALL MOTHERBOARDS AND THE MICROSOFT OF THEM- EVERYBODY WHO BUILDS A QUALITY LAPTOP USES THERE BOARDS. UNFORTUNATLY SOME CO DO NOT. When You couple a intel chip with non asus board - failure rate triples and heat dispersion is poor

:00hour :00hour :00hour - Awesome - Haven't had any trouble with Lenovo's

Just double check that the Graphics Card is up to par. Should not see any Wigglies at this link -

Let me know what you think about it and Windows 8 - I get asked frequently on purchase ideas, so I'm always looking for reviews from people that I know are not part of a sales team.

The computer CherryBlstr got would be a good one.

Do you still have your copy of Word or do you use OpenOffice (or a derivitive)

On the low range, I would recommend a minimum
i3 processor
500 GB Hard Drive
6 GB Ram
HDMI Output
Built in Camera
4 USB

Probably the $400-$550 Range, That's what makes ChrryBlstr's computer such a good deal

I haven't worked with many Tablets or Ipads but they certainly do the 3 things you use yours for very well.
Maybe think about going Spartans route with a tablet.

SONOFABITCHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Does EVERYONE link up to that goddamn tranny pic?!! Gets me every fucking time!!! ROTFL

Yes, Josh! He/she looked particularly sharp on the new monitor! HAHAHAHA! LOL

So far, so good. Windows 8 seems to be a lot fancier than it needs to be. I'll have a much better idea in a couple of days. Transferring everything over right now.

Peace! :)

hahaha - It's those little things in life that keep us sane

Awesome - A few things I've learned on Windows 8

When you are on the Start Page - Which has all the icons, you can just start typing and it will search for what you want.
If I want to go to the control panel, I start typing control panel.

Closing an app - Take your cursor to the very top of the page and when the mouse turns into a hand, hold down the left button and drag to the bottom of the screen. I spent 30 minutes with a client but couldn't charge him after he yelled, "Fuck this, Where's the Gawd Damn X" - lol

When in doubt scroll to the corner of the screen

Have a blast

That looks good Hawkeye - If I had a choice I would rather have 8 GB of Ram and 500 GB of Hard disk space. Than 6 and 750 like that one. Especially in the $550 range, try to get 8 GB. The I-5 processor is fast.

If you are upgrading from a desktop to a laptop you'll need a wifi router. If you can already connect to wireless, probably no need.

Home/School Office is I'm guessing $100-$150 just by itself - MS loves their product.

One alternative is - http://www.openoffice.org/
I've got 7 computers and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay to have Microsoft Office on all of them. Typically with a real version of MS Office you are allowed to install on 3 devices. Be careful with School versions because they are usually limited to one machine. On the computers I have that don't have MS I put openoffice on them and I am able to open read create save etc normally just like I could with MS Office. MS is definitely the better product but with Openoffice being free it sure is hard to beat the price.

There are plenty of free antivirus out there just like openoffice is there for MS. I have people that swear by their antivirus software and others, like me, who don't use antivirus at all. There are fewer viruses out there aimed at harming your computer and many more that are out there collecting data or trying to sell you something. Basically, on click on tranny links that you know to be safe.

Support - The computer you buy today will be old in 1-2 years, ancient in 3-5, and obsolete in 10-15. And you are paying $550 for it. I'd let the cost ride and if something bad happens in 3-5 years you get a new one that is faster, with an insane amount of ram and hd space, which is true for this purchase.

Good Luck
