Plenty of Treats in HSF last week...... Love those lock and load. Need to keep it moving.

Thurs 6 pm

Arvada West 55'
Colombine -27'

2 units on Over 55'
2 units on AW +27'

*Colombine has been a pleasant surprise in route to a perfect 9-0 year thus far. Rebels are ranked #140 in the Nation, #3 in the State and Div. Really haven't had a scare all year as they have outscored opponents 347-106. Rebs seeking 2nd undefeated season in last 4 and have already secured 1st in the Metro West. Sr QB Logan Deament (5'9" 175) leads the charge with with 610 pass yards but he's dangerous on the ground too. Last year he was a 2nd Team All-State player with 1,299 pass yards and 924 rush yards..... Rebs love to run the ball and like to ISO All-State OL Jr Andrew Gentry (6'8" 310 lbs) who has offers all over. This year's version is utilizing a RB by committee and average a mind numbing 311.1 ypg. Jr RB Tanner Hollens (5'11 170 lbs) leads with 938 rush yards (8.4 ypc). A slough of underclassmen help with running duties, and the JV team last year was 9-1 so they know about winning.

Arvada West Wildcats sit at 6-3....The team started hot out of the gates winning their first four before dropping 3 straight. Hopefully they are starting to figure it out as they have won last 2, including a dominant win over State Power Mullen 37-16.....Better results were predicted for the Cats as they returned 11 Offensive Starters from a 7-4 team... Also returned 8 starters on the Defensive side too... Sr QB Johnny Krutsch (5'11" 190 lbs) is a capable field general with 2,574 pass yards on 167 of 267 attempts, averaging 286 yards per game. Sr WR Chris McEahem (6'1" 180 lbs) has 1,087 receiving yards and averages 103.7 ypg.... Sr RB/DB Tony Cass (5'11" 185 lbs) has rushed for 622 yards and averages 7.2 ypg.

I suppose Colombine could run away with this game and they are certainly capable of winning by more than -27' but Arvada can score and Colombine has already clinched the Metro West so I could see some scrubs coming in to guard against injuries as the playoffs are right around the corner.... In fairness, Arvada is stuck in 4th place and can't move up or down.... Cats have scored 289 points this season but have given up 247......I won't venture out and call this game an upset but both of these offenses can produce points so I'm loving the Over here and I'll take a chance on Arvada + the points.

Basic 48
Liberty -38

2 Units on Over 48
Lean to Basic +38

Liberty Patriots HC Richard Muraco is staring at a 3-4 record on a team that has been the class of 4A Desert League for years and has won league each year from 2010-2017. The 3-4 record is misleading though and when I first saw the +38 on Basic I thought I might jump, however, I have to give Liberty credit as it beat Arizona Power Saguaro in Arizona 22-12....They followed with Utah State Power Lone Peak losing 21-10 (a game the starting QB was lost to injury.... The following week was National Power and at the time the #1 team in the Nation Florida's IMG Academy losing 35-0 (again without their starting QB........ The team won the following week 33-6 over Desert Pine (the 2 time defending state Champs in 3A)....however, this is when things get interesting..... Both teams were involved in a bench clearing kerfuffle that included a parent wearing a Desert Pine shirt that was arrested by Clark County School District Cops with Pepper Spray..... All this took place during a special Adidas Fri Night Stripes Series (televised) while Adidas had supplied both teams with all new gear. Both teams had to have double forfeit and it was egg on the face of two proud programs.

Liberty ended up with a bye and with the forfeit had 3 weeks off which meant a little rust... In 2017, Patriots were 11-2 and returned 7 offensive starters and 5 defensive starters.... Liberty has responded by winning the next two league opponents in convincing fashion behind Super Soph phenom RB Zyrus Fiaseu (6'0" 190) who has rushed for 654 yards despite playing with a broken hand 2 games. He averages 9.2 yards per carry and 109 ypg. He is described by his HC as a "Natural Freak"... He is getting alot of interest, and his brother Austin has accepted a full ride to UNLV.... Jr QB L Faoa (6'2" 210 lbs) has 430 pass yards and has rushed for 82.....Another Soph, WR Moliki Matavao (6'6" 235 lbs) is a huge target..... Sr OL/DL Troy Fautanu (6'5" 270 lbs) is drawing a lot of D1 interest.... Also, Sr TE/ILB (6'1" 225 lbs) has committed to UNLV also, you have to love UNLV keeping their local kids...Last week, Patriots clobbered undefeated Foothill 40-7 with Z Fiaseu rushing for 4 TDs with 235 yards. *Z Fiaseu led last years 11-2 team in rushing as a Frosh.

Basic Wolves are 4-3 and unfortunately we have more of the same brawling by with Shadow Ridge and having to forfeit 2 games also..... At the beginning of the season, Basic was picked to challenge Liberty but I'm not sure that is still the prediction... Last week QB Paul Myro passed for 248 yards and ran for a TD in a 41-27 win... Sr RB Dorian McAllister is can turn it lose in space, having rushed for 138 yards w/3 TDs... Wolves have a bulky outstanding OL to run behind... Basic has improved on a 3-7 team that allowed 30.3 points per game while only scoring 20.8.....Wolves are ranked #24 in Nevada and #21 in their division.

Liberty is starting to click just in time for playoffs... Pats haven't lost to a Divisional Opponent in 9 years.... Pats lost All State QB Kenyon Oblad to graduation and that left big shoes to fill as he is a legend in Nevada as he once passed for 7 TDs in one game and established the State Record for pass yards.. He's now playing QB at UNLV... Patriots have a lot of Polynesian players and are famous for doing a "Haka" ritual war dance while warming up before games.... It has been known to intimidate opposing teams (so much so the Clark County Athletic Commission made them turn the other way) but the dance gets the adrenaline pumping.... Players learn the dance and chant at the start of the season..... 8 time regional Champs Pat's are a big favorite here....

I'm betting the Over here and staying away from the side.... Liberty can get to the Over by themselves, but think Basic will contribute a few points...Last year, Liberty pummeled Basic 50-0 so there's that.

*Lots of big games Fri that will decide Conference Champs and Play-off Seeds.

4 pm
Hewitt Trussville 67'
Thompson -4

Hewitt Trussville Huskies are 7-2 and are led by Sr QB Paul Tyson (6'4" 215 lbs) who has passed for 2,407 yards while passing at a 72% completion rate.. The Alabama commit, is the grandson of legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant so his roots are deep. His top target, Sr WR Ja'Varius Johnson (5'10" 165 lbs) has caught 1,222 yards, averaging 135.8 ypg.... Soph RB Armoni Goodwin (5'9" 175 lbs) has rushed for 1,162 yards (7.4 ypc).

Thompson at 7-1 has a Alabama commit QB too... Sr Taulia Tagovailo (6'1" 200 lbs) has passed for 2,836 yards with 119 rush yards w/27 TDs... 4 Star OL Sr Amari Kight (6'7" 310 lbs) opens huge holes (also Alabama commited) for Sr RB Shadrick Byrd (5'10" 210 lbs) has 777 rushing yards (6.1 ypc)....

Both teams have a plethora of D1 Athletes, with the Huskies having 8 players with SEC offers... H-T has plenty of experience and a very even game plan averaging 208.9 rush yards per game and passing for 270.8 receiving ypg.... Thompson Warriors loves to throw the ball around averaging 353 receiving yards per game, while rushing for 146.9 ypg..... Warriors start a Frosh DE, J Alexander who had 3 SEC offers in 1 day.

Both teams have qualified for Class 7A playoffs, but the winner gets a 1st Rd Home game.... These two haven't faced each other since 2015 (H-T won 35-17)..Hewitt is the Region Champ and has outscored opponents 364-192........Thompsons Defense has struggled against good offenses this season.... Both QBs are capable of putting points on the board... The Alabama pundits have Thompson winning this game however I'm not sure why.... H-T beat Hoover 56-28 while Thompson lost 45-26.....I give the advantage to H-T who played a televised game in Week 1 so Fox Sports won't be a big distraction.

McKeesport 62'
Gateway -11

Gateway Gators (yes this is the Mascot for a PA team?) are a perfect 9-0 and outscoring teams 462-37...They have 5 shut-outs and nobody has come close... QB Brendan Majocha has passed for 1,776 yards w/28 TDs... He also has rushed for an additional 771 yards w/15 TDs... The Defense has been outstanding and leads the 5A...They are the defending WPIAL and PIAA Champs but are hungry for a state title.

McKeesport Tigers sit at 8-1 and also have a capable offense scoring 412-103...The running game is their strength averaging 248.8 ypg while only averaging 71.3 pass yards pg... Sr QB is dual threat passing for 700 yards w/12 TDs while rushing for 550 rushing (leads team) w/10 more TDs...

Both teams have clinched playoff spots but the order of the Top 4 is still to be determined in the Big East Conf... No Gateway team had ever won as much as last seasons 14-2 team while claiming the WPIAL Title and reached the PIAA Championship for the 1st time.... This year's version looks poised to grab the State Title..... McKeesport is pretty good too... And their Defense will look to slow down Gateway.....Still I like Gateway to pull away here but will play the Under here as the Defenses should keep these Offenses in check.

No Allegheny 58'

It was an easy call last week when No Allegheny played W Allegheny as both teams were just looking to avoid injuries to get to this game.... 6A WPIAL is the biggest classification in PA and between these two there is only 1 loss... Both programs made it to the State Semis last year and it appears they will be back as this game means nothing to the playoffs.... But, these two are playing for a Conf Championship in the States toughest Div.

I have done a write up on P-R Rams but I'm too lazy to go and find it... Suffice to say that P-R only loss was to IMG Academy out of Florida.... No shame in that although IMG stymied the Ram offense giving it a goose egg... Soph QB Cole Spencer won the QB job and has passed for 1,068 yards and has rushed for 497...Total yardage is 1,565.....Jr RB Luke Meckler (5'9" 160 lbs) is closing in on a 1,000 yards... Rams like to mix it up, averaging 231.8 rush yards pg... Passes for 128.9.....

No Allegheny Tigers are undefeated at 9-0 and rely on Sr RB Ben Maenza has 894 rush yards and has Joey Porter Jr playing both ways as a lock down Safety... No Allegheny lost to P-R last year 49-25....

This total looks too high for what may turn out to be a defensive struggle.... I give P-R the edge as the program returned 24 Seniors from their State Championship Team.. HC Eric Kasperowicz is 55-13 winning at a 83% clip......I like P-R here but love the Under more.

Rancho Verde 56
Heritage -3'

Rancho Verde Mustangs under HC Pete Duffy are sporting a 9-0 record outscoring all takers 537-81....Despite only returning 3 Offensive Starters and 5 Defensive Starters the team averages 271 rush ypg and passes for 240.6 receiving ypg.... Mustangs have tallied 73 Total TDs... Sr RB Xavier Ugorgi (5'9" 180 lbs) has rushed for 1,459 yards (162.1 ypg) and (11.2 ypc).... Frosh QB AJ Duffy (6'0" 190 lbs) has passed for 2,093 ypg and has carried for 186 yards... Accounting for 32 TDs....

Heritage Patriots average 328.1 rush ypg and only pass for the token 90.8 ypg.... They do total 61 TDs..... Sr QB Devan Freeland (6'3" 190 lbs) has 1,000 pass yards.. Pats have 2 RBs that have eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark, while Sr RB Sherod White leading the way with 1,171 yards (8.5 ypc) averaging 106.5 ypg..... Sr RB Javier Luna (5'9" 170 lbs) has 1,060 yards (11.3 ypc)..... Hermitage is putting a 42 game league win streak on the line...

These two haven't faced off since 2013.... The stakes are high as the Ivy League Title is on the line... Also the winner and loser will determine the seeding for Div 2 playoffs... Heritage has a 2-1 edge in the limited series including a 34-33 come from behind victory in the Section Championship game 5 years ago.... Heritage does have a State Title under their belt in 2013.....

Both teams were expected to challenge for the Conf Title at the start of the season and here we are.... Despite two high powered offenses, Heritage will look to grind it out on the ground..... thereby keeping the clock moving... The title games tend to be defensive chess match.... I like Rancho to stay close so I'll take the 3'.

Whoops.. Dble post...

Still scratching my head on the HSF Liberty vs Basic score... Liberty won 12-0 but evidently dropped passes in the end zone and committed some penaltys that kept the score in check... Weird score for such a high powered offensive attack..... Just goes to show you can never trust high school football.
