Great trip to the southern CA region to watch some prime HSF football......

Thurs Action:
7 pm
Camas -10'
Sumner 54'
From the North.... Some WA HSF.... 2 of 4A Div collide with playoff ramifications further down the line... Camas Papermakers (not a typo) meets Sumner Spartans. The last time these two hooked up was 2016 State Semis which Camas won 46-21 *Camas would go on to capture the State Crown. Both teams are 3-2.
Sumner Spartans are ranked #37 in the State and #19 in 4A....6 Offensive Starters return as well as 5 on Defense.... While the Spartans dynasty record is 97-66 (64-48 in League), they have gone 60-9-1 since 2012 and have won or shared 3 SPSL titles.... Those games have been under the able tutelage of HC Keith Ross who is in his 18th season.... The teams 2017 record was 10-3 and Offense averaged 39.9 ppg while allowing 16.1.....so far Sumner has outscored opponents 139 points against 78.....The big loss this year is to Puyallup 38-7, then a 2 point win to Curtis 28-26 and a tight 14-10 win to Rogers... To be fair though, the last 3 teams played have a 11-4 record, and Puyallup is a monster this year. Sumner has advanced to the State semis the past 2 seasons..
The past 2 seasons has seen 3 top Div 1 talent graduate.. Connor Wedington is at Stanford, Ben Wilson at TCU and Tre Weed at E Washington.... This year's squad has a young but effective O-Line with Sr Alex Beringer (6'1" 295 lbs) and Frosh OL Andrew Tillett (6'2" 285 lbs) anchoring.... TE Sr John Hopkins (6'2" 260 lbs) is seeing D1 interest but no commit yet..... QB Sr Austin Grondahl has been waiting in the wings the past 2 years, He has a cannon arm... The best player on the offense is RB Bryan Faulk (last year had over 500 yards on ground and over 100 by air).... The teams strength is its Defense, which runs a hybrid 4-2-5 with Dbs regarded as possibly the best in the state.
Camas under HC John Eagle is ranked #21 in State and #10 in the Div..... Team ran a perfect record in 2016 (14-0)to capture the State Championship... I'm not sure what a Papermaker represents but the school hasn't missed a playoff since 2009....The last time Papermakers were 3-2 under HC Jon Eagle was 2007.....The Dynasty record is an outstanding 145-30 (70-8 in League).. The team only returns 3 Offensive Starters and 2 Defensive. Only 1 returning 4A GSHL Selection is K/P/QB Andrew Boyle (he was 37 of 39 on PATs, so he takes his trade seriously.... Camas has outscored opponents with 248 points to 86....
The only player left from the 2016 State Champs is WR/S Sr Shane Jamison (6'4" 215 lbs).... QBs share time in the Offense, with Sr Andrew Boyle passing for 529 yards w/10 TDs on 30 of 58 attempts and has rushed 13 times for 102 yards w/2 TDs.... QB Jake Blair has passed for 488 yards w/5 TDs and has carried 10 times for 60 y w/2 TDs....*Between the two, Boyle is the #1 Option..... RB is by committee with Zach Terry, Blake Deringer, and Randy Yaacoub sharing carries... Yaacoub and Deringer were absent from last year's production as both were out with injuries..... *Deringer returned to High School competition by running his way to the State Finals in Track and Field.... So far, Yaacoub has 37 carries for 181 yards w/6 TDs (caught 3 passes for 23 yards w/1 TD) and Deringer has 126 yards w/2 TDs on 21 rushes... Terry has 21 rushes for 69 yards w/1 TD.......WR Luc Strubelle leads receiving Corp with 15 catches for 310 yards w/7 TDs..... Sr TE/DL David Ingram (6'5" 250 lbs) is drawing interest from D1 schools..*WRs range from 6'4"-6'6"........The O-Line is a strength of the program that features size, strength and good depth.....
Papermakers haven't missed a play-off since 2009....Last year snapped a 7 year reign as League Champs....In last week's opening of 4A GSHL League play, Camas took their anger out on Heritage with a demoralizing W 65-3....Both QBs combined for 220 yards passing w/3 TDs and a 81% completion rate..
So what to do, what to do...... When these two met in 2016 Camas put up 45 points....... Both programs need a win to steer them in the right direction going forward.... I think Camas is firing on all cylinders and even in a Loss to State Power Bellevue (the team that upset the apple cart by stopping DeLaSalle, CA National win streak)... Camas was beating Bellevue before a huge comeback effort and losing in the final seconds on a FG.... Just think Camas is the better team here, but expect Sumner to put up a fight and points..
2 units on the Over 54'. LOSS
1 unit on Camas -10' LOSS
