Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer has signed a seven-year contract extension giving him an enormous raise and guaranteeing him $21 million over the life of the contract.
The new deal runs through the 2014 football season, when Fulmer will be 64.
Fulmer, who has been in his job the longest of any current SEC football coach, has a 147-45 career record. But it's hard not to think that $3 million a year is an awfully big deal to give a guy who hasn't won an SEC title since 1998.
"I am really proud of our university's commitment to myself and my staff and support group," Fulmer said. "I love my job, I love these kids and I love the University of Tennessee."
Fulmer's assistants will also benefit from this new deal. Their total salary -- before bonuses -- will be just under $2 million in 2008, with defensive coordinator John Chavis and offensive coordinator Dave Clawson each making $340,000. Offensive line coach Greg Adkins and defensive ends coach Steve Caldwell will each make $200,000, and the lowest-paid assistant on the staff, wide receivers coach Latrell Scott, will make $150,000.
