15 minutes ago Top Stories - Reuters

DENVER (Reuters) - Hunter S. Thompson, the renowned American journalist and novelist who wrote "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself at his Colorado home on Sunday night, police said. He was 67. "We do have confirmation that Hunter Thompson was found dead this evening of an apparent self-inflicted wound," said Tricia Louthis, spokeswoman for the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office. Thompson was found dead at his home outside the ski resort of Aspen. The Sheriff's Office was unable to provide any further details.

"Gonzo journalism is a style of reporting based on William Faulkner's idea that the best fiction is far more true than any kind of journalism - and the best journalists have always known this. Which is not to say that fiction is necessarily 'more true' than journalism - or vice versa - but that both 'fiction' and 'journalism' are artificial categories; and that both forms, at their best, are only two different means to the same end." (Hunter S. Thompson)

"Groveling is wrong for the soul, like grappling with whores in a drugstore."

"Anytime there's a big sporting event, go to either the winning or losing town; there'll be riots in both of time. Riots are fun."

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side."

Sad news indeed...

I'm a huge fan of his writings, his politics, his outlook on life and his excesses ( I was there once; don't wish to go there again)
Had the pleasure of seeing him speak on campus when I was an undergrad at the U of Iowa. He showed up 25 minutes late; was so drunk and/or stoned that he couldn't be understood by anyone more than 5 rows back--part of that was the horrible sound system in this ballroom at the memorial union, and this was the early 80s, when the sound sytems everywhere sucked... he was speaking to a crowd of 1000+...the audience didn't take long to turn on him and he in turn cursed us without even batting an eye....Many people split soon after he started speaking and soon me and my buddies found ourselves in the 3rd row where we could hear just fine.
During his 45 minutes on stage, he drank a full bottle of Wild Turkey and started into a 2nd...once done speaking, he had much trouble getting off the stage--it took both his press agent and a U of I rep to help him off....

from his quotes and his latest action, i would venture to guess that his outlook on life was very much disturbed

Hey Redsfann:

Why do you find that impressive and a "pleasure"?

The human gene pool is losing nothing by this over-rated guy's death. Sad day for the liberals and the morons at ESPN though.

Not too many writers around these days who sink their teeth into what's around them and write with that kind of talent. Thompson wrote a lot about sports gambling in his column. Englishman, you may find some of his pieces interesting if you can temporarily ignore the black/white switch in your brain.

King and Grisham can tell their stories but there's a lot more worth reading than this commercial parade of hacks. Thompson's last column detailed a new sport he thought up that involved hitting a 9 iron to the green while a defender stood poised with a shotgun to play defense and keep the ball from landing on the putting surface.

You can check out his stuff at espn.com, page2.

Once again, conservatives will not allow themselves to appreciate someone who thinks outside the box.

Ever since the Republicans gained control of the three branches of our government, conservatives are coming out of the wordwork for various reasons.

I feel it has to do with their extreme desire to, at long last, be apart of a "team".

My advise is for you to join a bowling league, as they are always looking for good team players.

no pepper, well said.

lmao someone who blows their brains out and lives on sex and drugs?

thats "thinking outside the box"?

such enlightenment has been around since time started and this 1960's puke who hated America is "thinking outside the box" as he blows his brains out....

such misery does not warrant my company and hopefully this scumbag doesn't influence too many more overachievers to his lifestyle

one will find much more happiness in an outlook on life which involves "helping one's neighbor" and "being a role model and positive influence in other's lives" and such things

This is one for the record books..

for the first time at Jacks.. i dont agree with mr wolf..

i myself am a rebublican, not overly conservative but republican..

and Hunter Thompson has been one of my favorites since my freshman year of college..

libs tend to stereotype conservatives as super religious racist drones incapable of creative and individual thought.. but i assure you we are not all that way..

He will be missed

On the course!
Gee, Friezer.......Sounds like the guy was a "free thinker" to me. Probably didn't care for what his Marxist professors had to say, and set his own course.

Maybe there's hope for you, yet.

Got to see him back in the late 70's in Columbia. Always was a fan of his. He had a thermos full of who knows what, and by the end of the night it was gone and so was he. Everybody kept getting on him about being Uncle Duke in Doonesberry. He played the part well. Hope all of his demons are gone.
Heres for you Uncle Duke: :weed: :drinky: :drinky: :toast:

So the Far Right jerks are super quick to say "I told you so" when a guy like Hunter kills himself, yet completely refuse to acknowledge what should be a rather humbling embarrassing story like Jeff Guckert/Gannon. Sounds about right.

A pretty far Right guy another football site where I chat had the class to acknowledge Hunter's talent and showed remorse at the simple fact of a lost life. Sometimes we should just be decent, regardless of politics.

like redsfann said, most critics have never read anything that he wrote. there was a method to the madness.
