With all the traffic jams why didn't they open the IN bound lane to leave? Seems simple to me?? Ok medical people might need to come in but every picture I have seen you have all the in bound lanes empty. :scared

what if you had to head down to the coast to evacuate Grandma?

still think opening up bidirectional lanes is a good idea 2-3 days before a storm "might" hit?

yes, because if you *live* there, you should be able to figure out the farm roads!!

AND....grandma should have already been evacuated prior to 24 hours before i think they should have made all lanes on interstates *outbound*

2 days prior, HELL YES..... it wasn't 3 days prior that they finally did it .... it was 1.5

you can't get THAT kind of a population out of an area as soon as you could have NO

news flash: many farm roads were closed and/or backed up in both directions as many people went southwest before heading north

2nd news flash:

2 ways out of Galvetraz:

A) 2 lane interstate
B) Ferry

Opening up the interstate in both directions 2-3 days in advance is preposterous. There would be NO SUPPLIES for people traveling and NO GAS nor anyway of getting gas or ambulance to stranded motorist. Nor would there be any way to evacuate granny in time. Evacuating 4-5 days in advance creates the need to evacuate granny up to 4-5 times per year.

3rd News flash: Houston did not evacuate NEAR capacity as people saw the 'cane turning....imagine if it did not turn....that traffic jam you saw would be much much much worse

I honestly dont see a good solution here unless Houston builds more freeways somehow as all other freeways are under construction for the most part creating some bottleneck 95% of the time

i'm not from down there, so have no clue as to where Galvatraz actually is, but if it is SOUTH of Houston, it wasn't affected for southbound traffic according to the news. it was only interstate from Houston and north that was made northbound only for 100 miles.

and if you need to *evacuate* granny that often for MAYBES, then just maybe you should have granny move up north with you.

people are doing nothing but bitching about the way Katrina was handled .... but look at it as a sports team (which should go quite so far over so many heads) they PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there has never been anything such as what happened to N.O. in recent history.... they did what they could, they LEARNED, and then they tried to apply N.O .mistakes in TX.

Shit.....so many people think it should be SO easy if prepared for...

let me ask anyone here this question....

McCausland Iowa just got hit with an F-5 tornado, they have no phone service, aren't in a cell phone area, electricity is out, every source of food and water was just blown to the next city and/or destroyed..... how many of you would know how to get them help IMMEDIATELY as it was expected was done in N. O..... they are americans too, right??

and edit: as far as getting emergency stuff south.... that is what shoulders and medians are for... or don't they have those in TX??

my point also is there really isnt anything to bitch about as i dont see much for a solution

coastal cities have this problem more so than McCausland Iowa. Not sure a F-5 tornado would wipe out all major access points to McCausland Iowa.

I really dont see any easy solutions.

As for granny....not much you can do if granny will not move

its just a wee bit more complicated than just telling ol grandma you are going to move her

i agree with you now freeze, there ISN't a solution, just as those that think that help should have been there faster to N.O. you live, you learn!!! and i never said an f-5 would wipe out ACCESS to the city, but it would wipe out any of their ability to contact anyone if they needed help.....a tornado and a hurricaine are two majorly different things. a tornado could skip down to the ground over a tiny stretch and not even touch across the street. how could they tell anyone it touched ground in their little area if every car was picked up and dropped in the next county.....yes, it would take someone to WALK for help. it sucks, there is no way to *protect* everyone from mother nature and deliver them food and water immediately, but that's the way it is, and anyone that chooses to live in disaster prone areas needs to know that they could be next!!!

hey, Bahama, hope to meet you at the SB party in Vegas one of these yrs, Matt(kosar) said you were a nice gal :mj14:  ........good point though, mother nature is mother nature, you cant get every person out into safety, some areas are prone to it and the people have to know that before they live there, defintely well said

You would think the practice there getting they would find away. Should not take a giant of a mind to get it. Either you can move 1.5 million folks in 48 hours or you cant. But having them left sitting on a road in there car seems like a bad idea.

djv....there IS NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! unless your giant of a mind can come up with one!!!! they can try to do the best they can, but there is always someone that is gonna bitch about it in the other direction!!! (aka: freeze) so they open up all lanes northbound earlier...then what?? the people that can't go south bitch about it... let's hear your solution. only thing gonna help is when we enter the Jetson era....all have jet props strapped to our backs, and can fly without crashing into one another while we still choose to live in disaster prone areas.

Freeze and Bahama are wrong. Lots of things could have been done better. The state dropped the ball bigtime. But what do Ii know, I just live here. Having taken 6 hours to get back today I am too tired to argue about it though.

A BIT older??? LMAO!!!!! let's try a LOT (notice the separation in the words arrow) older!!!!! i've been to the last 5 parties, and this SB falls on my 46th B'day...... but even tho i don't see any way unless i get a miracle job in Iowa that i'd be able to make it to this years party, i would hitchhike out there to see kosar make good on his breakdancing promise ;) (even if you haven't been around long enough to know what i'm talking about...HE DOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

LOL that's ok, hopefully you do make it out there though, I'm in the same boat as you due to weird finances and other things I can't control......He won't breakdance though, although I've seen him on several VO's and he doesn't do that, but if he promised that then he has to be good for it  although it would be far from a pretty sight, as would me break dancing, please cease all people watching if either of those happened.....see you later Bahama
