Nope.
You can't beat him. He shot 90 on something like a 7,300 yard course, set up for a championship with deep bunkers, gnarly rough and fast greens.
If you are scoring properly, according to USPGA rulebook, you stand no chance of shooting better than 90 on such a course.
Whatever his problems, issues, a pro is so much better than any amateur. I've been through this 100 times with my pompous BIL who is one of the best amateurs in NJ. He reckons he can break 90 at Congressional #2 when it is set up for the US Open.
No, no, no. I have a standing bet with him that he could not break 100 on that course under those conditions. Or Winged Foot, or any typical US Open course. And I'm deadly seroius when I say I would put up $100,000 for this bet.
Good amateurs always think they are better than they are. They also always think the average pro is really not so elite.
Saw Justin Leonard at the Phoenix Opern last year at TPC in Scottsdale. He got up and down from such a difficult position to make par at one hole that I said at the time I would bet ANY amateur in the world he couldn't do that under those conditions. Yet Leonard did it, he had to think carefully about what he was going to do, really concentrate and make a 10 foot putt to save par. Incredible touch. But I think Leonard does this 9 times out of 10, if not more. I will bet that ANY amateur could not do that more than once in 20 attempts. Also, I bet the WORST score Leonard ever makes from that spot is a three. I guarantee you many good amateurs make 4 or more often. It was such an awkward spot.
Then add in the fact a huge crowd is watching you and the TV cameras are present!!!
Justin is currently ranked 52nd on the PGA tour this year.
I know you only said it as a joke, just gave me a chance to weigh in, not to hijack. Sorry.
