Sorry I missed this thread.

You did the right thing though.

I'm assuming this is another large established company.

Before you give your two weeks notice -
download all your shit
connect with your customers and let them know you are going to be moving on and will connect with them when you get set up at your new place.

Because after you give your notice to your boss they are going to do a few things..
cut off your internal resource access
lock down your CRM Tool or any type of customer database
replace you with a new guy or divvy up your customer pool amongst existing guys
and tell your customers that you got fired, in order to retain their business.

No matter how good of a relationship you might have with your boss, they will do something along these lines. Probably not your boss, but someone, somewhere will.

In many occupations this is forbidden by contractual terms and carries with it a stiff penalty.

Not depending on how it is phrased when you talk to the customer -

Allowable - I am leaving XYZ company later this month and look forward to keeping in touch with you when I settle in to my new role.

Typically not allowable - I am leaving XYZ company to go to ABC company and want you to shift your business over there.

Add in another layer about any NDA/Non-compete he may have signed. Depending on the severity of the non-compete, a sales role typically isn't allowed to get to his new job and just go straight to his old client list and switch them over. HOWEVER, and this is why LinkedIn is beautiful... connect with all your customers on LInkedIn before you leave, let them know you are leaving, then when you switch to the new company and update your LI profile --> will show up in the feed of your old customers. They see it there, reconnect with you.
You haven't specifically targeted them and asked for their business. They've come to you.

Yes, I'm getting all my info. My non-compete I'm not worried about it in the least. I know two others who did get sued and both won, In GA there non-compete is crap. Plus once the acquisition happens it will be void. Linkedin is a beautiful tool and I use it extensively.
