What kind of dog can I get that can be trained to protect the kids from strangers? I don't want some kind of freak that will turn on them for tripping over his food dish though.

We had a minor situation in the neighborhood today that just pushed me across the line as I have been thinking about it for a while now.

Gotta be some kind of dog that can be trained to watch over the kids while they are in the yard playing. Most of the time either me or my wife is outside, but not constantly.

Plenty of dog lovers on this site, someone must have some idea, thanks in advance.

pfan,

I currently have 2 Bernese Mountain dogs, and they are unbelievable.

They were/are used for protecting and herding cattle, pulling carts from the farms to the diaries, and protecting the family.

They are great with kids, very trainable, and are big enough (120 lbs) that they will scare the shit out of anyone that tries to mess with your kids.

Any dog will only be as good as the time spent training it though.

Good luck.

penguinfan.....just my opinion as I'm no expert, but of course the first thing would to be looking at a dog that is really known for getting along with kids. I know and maybe I'm a bit bias but Bullmastiff's get along well with kids, and they're very intimating looking which will keep problems at a distance. I know that Jakey used to sit on our veranda (my avatar when using the word danger) with the kids and people would observe as they walked by. Some with comments and some not. I had him trained to the word danger by voice and also putting my two fingers together. If I had the chance, when someone would stop to talk I'd get Jakey to give a real stern look by the word just so the stranger could get a glance at what a problem he might be. Professional training for you and your family would be right on for whatever dog you choose.

Good Luck.....

You may want to look into a German Shepherd. They are beautiful and very loyal dogs. Seeing some of these dogs in action "Protecting" certain buildings is amazing as I have seen first hand, as well they are great with kids.

The Important thing is to remember any dog that is poorly bred will go off. There is nothing you can do about that. That is why the importance of getting a breeder that is AKC certified. As well that the dog's blood line is verified by a vet. Easily done if you bring in the papers. Many breeders will say that and create some papers on the computer. A vet can check with the AKC and know forgeries on a dogs papers.

Here is a great article on guard dogs

UNPARALLELED DETECTION: Imagine an alarm system that travels with you, is not easily inactivated, and interprets what it detects with a brain programmed by nature to read body language. Remember that many violent crimes are perpetrated by people known to their victims. People who are likely to be admitted into your home past your current detection system and then suddenly reveal their violent intent. That sudden change is easily detected and challenged by a well bred and trained dog.

EFFECTIVE DETERRENCE: A well trained canine shows a willingness to defend his home and family with an authority that discourages violation of your privacy or safety. Most miscreants would rather not even test the commitment of such an animal with much easier targets available elsewhere. Let them pass you by!

OVERWHELMING DEFENSE: A well trained canine is a protective barrier difficult to breach. Here is a defensive system that comes to your aid when needed or summoned. It cannot be wrested from you to be used against you or your loved ones. Unlike a bullet or chemical spray, once launched, this weapon can be recalled if the threat no longer exists.

DEVOTED COMPANIONSHIP: Most of the time a trained dog is merely a faithful, loving, gentle and well behaved member of your household. Perhaps the most important contribution he makes is the peace of mind that comes from knowing that he is on duty while you and your family go about your daily routine.

The bold part is the most important. That the dog will recall when threat no longer exists. GS are the only dogs that will do this time and time again. A dog by nature will not let go when it is attacking unless it has the brain to know how to turn off this attack mode. GS can do this. Hence the number of attacks or mistaken attacks by other breeds, which again is something you want to avoid.

Best of Luck and be ready to spend some money not only on the dog but also on the training.

Agree with 1%er 100 Percent, I was about to post the same thing, but u beat me to it!!

I really like bull mastiff, but they are much larger dogs than german shephards. A pure breed Greman Shephard is one of the smartest dogs u can get, that is why the police depts always use them, and very loyal and loving animal to his owners.

Pfan -

German Shephard. No other breed to consider - especially with kids.
They are fiercly loyal, and can be extremely well mannered with kids. I had one, then we had a lil baby as well.. the shepard would let our daughter (less than 1 yr old) pull its ears, tail, fur, snuggle.. you name it...
if someone came into our home the dog would lay between that person and our baby instantly.

What it sounds like you need... a German shepard is very identifiable as a "don't f*ck with me" type dog to strangers.

Thanks all, I am definatly going to look into a German Shephard.

We had a bit of a situation the other day where I would have felt better with a decent sized dog in the yard. The kids are big enough to be outside without us and are smart enough to run from trouble, but there was a van driving around the neighborhood for hours on Saturday stopping at random houses saying they were selling vacuum cleaners, yet didn't have any with them???

They tried to talk their way into the house directly across from us and she happens to be friends with my wife and called over and told us about it. Well 30 mins later they come back around for the 5th or 6th time and my wife goes out and stops them and tells them they need a permit to solicit in this neighborhood, they tell her they are not selling anything???

Not too bright of my wife to go out and stop them without getting me first, but she's a bully like that/not too birght.

The girl across the street had called the police who came in pretty short order and stopped the van and questioned the three guys inside about what they were up to, they said she called the police just because they were black. That had nothing to do with it, but put the cops in a bad situation since I live in just about the whitest neighborhood you can find.

Cops asked them to finish up any business they had and move along and told the girl across the street there was no law being broke.

We have a decent sized fenced in yard and seems to me if someone was up to no good they would pick an easier target than a fenced in yard with a big dog ready to chew their ass up, at least I would feel better about it.

don't blame you for being concerned. I'm very paranoid when it comes to my kids, and I scarcely let them outside by themselves. Sad, isn't it?? I think of all the stuff I and my friends did as kids, where all we rode bikes, etc. No way you can do that stuff now, or if you do, you're not too bright. Lots of sickos around. Back on topic, we had a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who was great with the kids and very protective of people and property.
