Glad I am a Packer Backer...

Glad I am a Packer Backer...

Going to be a very tuff decade for the Purple Team....:sadwave:

Wonder WTF they see in Ponder?

"The kid is very poised under pressure," Spielman noted.
He better be. He's going to have defensive lineman crawling up his leg unless the Vikings find a way to get some decent protection for him, and their other quarterbacks, over the next two days. But it was obvious that the Vikings were infatuated with Ponder. And coach Leslie Frazier has been obsessed about the quarterback position since the end of the season.

The whole FAWKING ESPN team was like stuttering to say anything positive about the pick. Then Kiper chimes in.. His one question mark is "ARM STRENGTH" 12th overall and you worried about his arm strength. FAWK ME!

I bet FSU a few times in his career. I think he covered once for me and that was last year against Wake. A defensive TD and a bunch of Wake turnover. FAWK ME

With the 2nd pick BP we should take Nate Whitaker, Stanford, K, 5'8, 181. He's the 5th rated kicker but being from Stanford smart as they come.

Well, count me in the category of liking the pick. I completely understand those that are concerned about his injury issues, and preferred the Vikes address the OL and CB needs in that spot. Especially with Prince sitting there, who would have been a great addition. But I think there are many positives in this pick, and as of now I will remain positive about it. My reasoning:

I love gambling on a kid who has a great mind, great confidence because of that, and has great mechanics and QB intangibles like pocket presence, good footwork, leadership, etc. He's had bad games, sure, but some of that could be due to playing hurt - which he'll have to do in the NFL. But the positives in this kid put me in the mind of some other QBs who came in with concerns or were not highly rated Montana, Brady come to mind - and this kid is the same kind of body type and mental game. These are rare, of course, but nobody valued those guys early at all. Anyone remember a kid named Aaron Rogers that evidently a lot of teams didn't value all that highly? Not the same thing, of course, but who really knows what QB prospect will turn out to be special? I would have loved to see them make a play for Gabbert, even with a #1 and #2, but our record last year signals we have more needs than just a QB prospect that this year more than any I remember have the experts wondering about them.

I personally am not excited about selling the farm and the future on Kevin Kolb, let alone Carson Palmer. I don't think a McNabb stint would benefit the club in the long run, but that's an option if you want to both win (maybe) and better prepare the kid. I kind of liked Dalton, too, but you'd here more of the same kind of concerns and others. If you wanted to take a risk on Mallet, that's your choice. I'll take a kid like Ponder on a reach over Mallet, considering some of our QB reaches of late.

We already have an athletic kid who probably has trouble reading defenses and won't develop into a good QB in Webb. So, what are your options in addressing the most important position on the team that has been SO frustrating for us for so long? I see this as a sensible attempt.

This draft is reportedly deep at the OL position. Hopefully a decent guy can be found in round two or three and I think that's what they need next. I also think a solid CB would be needed with so many questions there and considering the division they now play in where people sling the ball around the field like they do. Again - I probably would have gone with Prince, but I am fine taking a chance here instead of wondering incessantly about what they plan to do.

I realize my position is not shared by most, and I understand the unhappiness. But I have no problem putting my faith in Studwell and the scouts who have produced draft picks like Peterson (remember the injury concerns there?) and Harvin (remember the Ganja concerns there?) and decided to package a draft to obtain Jared Allen - all decisions that were risky and key for the club. I'll stay optimistic until this kid has proven to be a bust, and will hope for the best.

Scott Studwell was a great player but his ass should be fired. I know the people you mention. I mean AP falls to you and you know he is a stud, Harvin falls to and he is a stud. Trading for Allen is a no brainer. Reaching for Ponder who has trouble beating Wake Forrest is really puttijng your ass in the hot seat, but that is not why I would fire Studwell.

Your bread and butter ala the Pack the Pats all rely on picks after the first round. Look up the Viking drafts before the past 2 years. There is nobody left. A fucking un trained monkey throwing darts can do a better job after the first round. That is why this team's roster is filled with free agent players, cause they don't know what the fuck they are doing on draft day.

The TE thing reminds me of something I wondered about later in the year last year with them never throwing to Shiancoe. There must be something in that guy that the coaching staff does not like, and I don't know what it could be. If you're not going to resign Shiancoe, then the pick makes some sense, and from most reports the Notre Dame kid has a lot of upside.

That being said, I'm confused as to what they think they have on the offensive line that they are happy enough with not to try to improve that outlook. And with the pass happy division they are in, they certainly could use another decent CB or safety.

Still seeing the talk about them bringing McNabb on board, wondering if that might happen. It sure seems like they think they have enough to win right now, and that might be a problem moving forward, considering how good the Lions seem to be getting, how good the Pack is already, and the Bears seem to be very good in many areas.

Today is going to be a strange one, but they'd better address OL and DB with a couple of picks. I don't agree with your assessment of the way the drafts have gone the past few years, but you make some good points. If Ponder turns out to be a good QB - if - and this new TE turns out to be a good player, I can understand the plan. Dismissing the fact that other teams passed on Peterson and Harvin and we didn't isn't a small thing in my mind, let alone packaging our draft to go after a player like Allen that was a big concern in many ways are worthy of support for me. This group seems to target the player they think is key, and they go after him.

At some point you need to give some credit for the big swings they are taking - when ALL of them are working out so impressively. I'd have to go back and look at other picks you talk about to argue that point.

I keep forgetting to mention them drafting Sidney Rice and look how he's turned out. There is plenty to commend this drafting group for of late, IMO.

Secondly, looking back at the past few drafts, the rest of the picks other than the big ones have produced a lot of players that are on the roster and have made solid contributions. I won't list all of them, but after looking I was surprised at how many of them are either good players or serviceable players. I sure don't see them swinging and missing very often - at all.

I found their draft history and will post since 2002 when Studwell go there. I think his role diminished with Chile.

Hard to judge a draft one year later. Did not like this draft cause they traded down and to Gerhart and Detroit got a better back,. Cook injured, Gerhart can play but I think he needs to be moved to a FB, Griiffen maybe playing a lot if he gets his head out of his and may have a sleeper in Webb. Yet all these guys could be off the roster in 2years.
2010

2 Toby Gerhart Stanford
4 Everson Griffen USC
5 Chris DeGeare Wake Forest
5 Nathan Triplett Minnesota

Harvin fell to em but it was a risk pick and has paid off. Loadholt could still develop. Allen and Brinkley make contributions on special teams and Allen will take more defensive snaps this year. This draft has potential to be great.

"the bunker"
when free agency opens back up,if the vikes can grab a guy like marc bulger to fill the gap until they can groom a young qb(webb might be better than ponder),they`ll be o.k....they have talent on the roster.....

bulger can still fling it.....many people in baltimore thought that he would have handled things better than flacco last year...

2004, 2005, and 2008 drafts. Just brutal. No contributions and the 04 and 05 drafts have nobody left. Not counting 2010 cause it looks like a pile of shit but to early to tell this fucking team has sucked 3 out of the 5 drafts and if 2010 it looks like 4 outta 6 just plain suck.

FIRE EM ALL!

This puts a ton of pressure on this year's draft with a QB and TE.
