Alan Alda is so synonymous with Capt. Hawkeye Pierce that I think it goes without saying that if you didn't like him you didn't like MASH or vice versa.

I was only alive for the tail end of its original run, and growing up I viewed it the same way as I viewed the original Star Trek series - I never sought it out but if I happened to walk in the room while my dad was watching it I would stick around and watch it. Then I rediscovered it in syndication in the mid-90s and really started to love it. I've revisited it about once a decade since and think it holds up amazingly well.

I do think the show was figuring itself for the first few years, and for me doesn't really hit its stride until Potter and Hunnicut join in season 4. And then most definitely at the end it went downhill when they started letting Alda direct and he decided to get super preachy and forgot that the show was supposed to be a comedy that could occasionally do drama and not the other way around. So if you tuned in at the beginning of the run, didn't like it, and then only tuned in again towards the end I could definitely see not being very impressed with it and - in particular - thinking that Alan Alda was a smug little prick. But for me the run between season 4 and ~season 9 is just 6 years of amazing tv that holds up incredibly well.

Now please don't ask me to defend Alan Alda in anything else he's ever done; I can't.

I was only alive for the tail end of its original run,

Interesting how you worded that...

I don't much care for AA or Mash either....I think most the success should be credited to the writers...
