Including most of the likely academy award nominees. Here is my impressions of each.

The Two Towers - zzzzzzzzz. Better than the first but still not my cup of tea. May get a nomination but won't win the Oscar for best picture considering many of the academy voters include people like Jane Fonda :).

Chicago - Didn't live up to the hype. I personally find Renee Zwellwegger a bit annoying and Richard Gere was OK but nothing special. The movie itself had some great moments but overall didn't seem like a best picture winner to me.

The Gangs of New York - Awesome! My pick for the Oscar. The movie had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and Daniel Day Lewis should be a shoe in for Best Actor. A bit violent but considering past winners like Apocalypse Now, Platoon and even Rocky it is clear Academy voters aren't turned off that much by a bit of violence in the right context. Don't forget West Side Story won hands down in the 60s.

Catch Me If You Can - A fun movie but hardly best picture material. DiCaprio was pretty good but I found the movie dragged at times. Hanks stole the show but even still it was missing something and was way too long.

About Schmidt - I'm shocked this movie is even getting mentioned. IMO it stunk. Nicholson is overrated and Kathy Bates has never impressed me.

Movies I didn't see yet that are getting Oscar consideration:

The Hours
The Pianist
Adaptation

The Road To Perdition was a tremendous movie also and wouldn't surprise me if it won, although I think G of NY was a better overall picture.

last 5 movies we've seen have all been fantastic in their own right....

IGBY GOES DOWN - terrific cast....excellent storyline....reminiscent of CATCHER IN THE RYE....AND....no big hollywood hype!!!

PUNCH DRUNK LOVE - excellent....very dark....even sandler shines in this one even though it isn't his usual made-for-15-year-olds slapstick shitz!!!

BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE - michael moore does it again....very entertaining AND educational!!!

THE TWO TOWERS - a must see....been a fan of tolkein's since grade 6!!!

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING - probably the best of the lot....laughed throughout the whole thing....the 200-million it's raked in speaks for itself....unbelievable since the movie is very indie-like....AND....shot in toronto....if you're gonna take a girl to a movie....this one is highly recommended!!!

and that's it from the boy's soapbox!!!

:)

I remember the stupidest movie I ever saw in the theatre was Dead Ringers. I watched it for 35 minutes, and it was so stupid I had to leave. It of course was nominated later that year for best picture:rolleyes:

I haven't seen GONY or Two Towers yet, but I really want to. I heard that Bowling for Columbine was written with a gun control type perspective, so I'm sure I would hate it and won't ever see it.

I also think Gangs of NY is the best oicture I have seen so far this year. However I have to disagree with Myron about Lord of the Rings, I thought it was very entertaining & kept my interest throughout the movie. Catch Me if You Can is also a very entertaining movie that had great performances by Tom Hanks & Christopher Walken. Agree with Myron that it doesn't deserve an Oscar nomination. Liked road to Perdition but don't think it should be considered for an Oscar. Like to see Paul Newman get an Oscar nod. Loved Greek Wedding, like to see it get a nomination, but don't think it will as comedies don't get consideration. Although I am a Adam Sandler fan, I didn't like Punch Drunk Love, thought it was boring.

Eventhough I disagree with Michael Moore on so many issues, was going to see Bowling for Columbine because of a curiosity factor. But after reading what he said in London that because the passengers on the planes on 9/11 were white, they were cowards because they let the terrorists crash the planes into the buildings. He said that if they were black passengers on the planes instead, they would have never let the terrorists crash the planes

Myron,

Eventhough haven't seen Schmidt yet I don't know how you can say the Nicholson is over-rated. He is one of the greatest actors we have had.He has taken on such diversified roles as in Cuckoo's Nest, Prizzi's Honor, the joker in Batman, & As good as it Gets. I could go on, but I understand it is only a matter of preference.

ARI I was strictly referring to Jack in this movie. I loved almost all his roles including in The Shining, As Good As It Gets etc. and his role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest may have been one of the best performances ever, but for this movie he wasn't that good IMO.

Myron,

Sorry for my mis-understanding what you wrote. The Shining was a great movie with one of the best lines in movie history. "Here's Johnny" !
