Kosar may fill Marino?s front-office role

Updated: 7:09 p.m. ET Feb. 20, 2004

Former Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and University of Miami quarterback Matt Kosar is interested in becoming the Dolphins' senior vice president of football operations, two of Kosar's friends told the Palm Beach Post on Thursday.

The position is the same recently vacated by Marino, who quit after after about three weeks on the job.

Kosar met with Miami president Eddie Jones last week, in a meeting Jones said was informal and not specifically about the opening, the paper reported.

Dan Harri, who runs Kosar's Miami steakhouse, and Eric Blau, director of BJK Inc., one of Kosar's companies, have said the former NFL star wants a front-office position.

"With his football and business knowledge, who would be better?" Blau told the paper. "He is interested. He is very good friends with (team owner) Mr. (Wayne) Huizenga. He lives here in South Florida and he lives in Cleveland, so those are the teams he really has interest in."

A Dolphins spokesman said Huizenga is in no rush to make a hire.

Addressing the Marino situation for the first time Thursday, Dolphins General Manager Rick Spielman said he called the future Hall of Famer immediately after he resigned to say he respected and understood his decision.

"It didn't affect me one way or the other," Spielman told the paper. "It would have been great to have Dan.... I respect Dan for his decision because I think once he found out what the full commitment is and he's such a family man, he's so dedicated, that he thought that was more important at this stage to do that. You've got to be halfway nuts sometimes to put in the hours sometimes that go into these things."

Spielman declined comment on Kosar.

ar182, lol. I wish he would take that job with the Browns, but as long as Butch Davis has the stranglehold over every decision there (probably 1 more year), he won't touch it.

Gardenweasel,

Thanks. The 'Matt' part that AR put in there is because it's my name. You never heard of Berine Kosar? He's probably one of the top 5 qb's ever to play. (ok guys. calm down, i'm just kidding)
