Somebody at Micro$oft had a rare moment of conscientiousness, and produced an utility called RegClean.exe, a registry cleaner program which would make an herculian attempt at finding inconsistencies in the Windoze Registry, and try to make corrections based upon data already available.
It wouldn't make Microsoft Operating Systems great, but at least, it would clean up some of the rather blatant errors which stood out.
FOr a little while, RegClean.exe was a free download from http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload
It works on Win2K, which I have verified a few Minutes ago. It definitely runs on Win NT 4.0, because I have used it on NT 4.0 systems. I cannot say whether or not it will work in XP ... not am I sure that it would run on ME/98/95. I have a feeling I will find out soon whether or not it will run on Win 95 and I will test it on Win 98 when I get home tonight.
There was another really nifty program Micro$oft had in their free downloads section once, GifEdit.exe. This was a neat little qwuick and dirty GIF animater program which the not-so-well-to-do image makers could use to animate teh CompuServe formatted GIF images.
It has been long since Microsoft pulled both programs out of their download section, I can almost remember the echoes from the senior management conference rooms at Micro$oft---
~Oh no ... we can't leave such things out there for people to download for free and actually do something that will make Windows work well for them. If we did that, we will lose all control over our gullible customers!"~
This morning, I found a copy of RegClean in my backup archives for somebody who requested it. I also put it up on my webserver. I am not going post a link to it here, but if any of you wants it, please leave me a message and way to get it to you, and I will send you the link to it. Also, if you motivate me sufficiently enough to search for the GIF animator program, I might look in them archives again.
