Would'nt it be in both sides best interest to hide it. I mean the US would have pressure on them to stop the advance and the Iraq fighters maybe would lose their desire to continue to fight(which the current Iraqi leadership probably doesnt want). If he were really dead would the US really want to release this info? Just something I have thought about since the first night of the bombings.

Just speculating, but...

I don't think it would be in our interests at all to keep it hidden if we knew he were dead. You seem to be thinking that others will say "well, Saddam's dead. America can stop now."

But our mission was never solely to kill Saddam. It was to change the regime. That goes far beyond just getting rid of Saddam.

As a matter of fact, given that the loss of Saddam will (supposedly) weaken the resolve of the Republican guard and get others to begin uprising (supposedly), I would think they would want to get that info out there.

I can't really think of a good reason the US wouldn't want to get that info out.

Further speculation: Personally, I think he's already dead and his two sons are dead. Unless we know it 100%, and by 100%, I mean 150%, we don't want to say it because to state he was dead and then have him show up alive would be a PR nightmare.

shrimp....

Dont you think that if he were dead and we were going about this attack in the same way as we are now, we would be taking a bigger p.r. nightmare in the arab world than we are now?

If what you are saying is true about going after the regime..........what was all the talk about getting Saddam to go into exile or have him assinated. If that would have happened are you saying we would have still had the same strategy as we do you. Can you imagine the talk about us if we were taking over Iraq and Saddam was somewhere sitting on some island.

i agree with shrimp

i agree with shrimp

the administration has said time and again, they want to remove "the regime"....that also includes "chemical" ali and the sons(nepotism is alive and well in the saddam cadre).....i think it might seriously break the spirit of the people that are resisting.... we all have questions regarding saddam`s well being and whereabouts.......just the fact that he hasn`t been seen,period....maybe they are holding back for an opportune time, when things start to get really dicey, bring him out like a trump card........kind of "el cid" like....when they strapped heston to the horse and sent him riding out into the enemy......we`ll see....

If we could prove that Saddam was dead the vast majority of Iraq 's citizens would jump for joy, surrender or fight against the remainder of the Republican Guard, assuming they wouldn't just surrender, too.
