I know this team inside and out.

Losing Lopez has not been an issue till NOW.

Portland is by far one of the worst matchups for the SUNS. I know it. They know it.

I am shocked that the books hung -8.5 & -450 game 2.

Sure one would expect a bounceback and beating of Portland by the SUNS tonight but.............

Lets go back to Jan 1, 2009 since then Portland has beaten Phoenix 4 out of the last 5. Twice in Phoenix and now twice without ROY.

So let me break this down for us...

Why is Portland so effective vs the SUNS ?

Simple. Nash is damn good on offense (one of the best) but as defense goes he cannot guard Miller.

Switching is constant between....Miller/Nash and Rudy/Richardson.

Horrible matchup for Phoenix.

Inside----------AMARE - 6"10 has been an absolute beast since the trade deadline. UNTIL NOW. Why ?

Portland offers 6"11 - BEAST in Aldridge who is in many ways as good as AMARE cause of his inside out game & 6"11 CAMBY who is still a defensive beast and defensively better than ANY PLAYER THE SUNS HAVE. Lets not even mention COLLINS who should not even be playing in the NBA.

Amare has been killing teams because of he goes inside one on one and drew the double team that left sharp shooters in Nash, Richardson or Hill open outside.

NOW.

Aldrige and Camby clog the middle and Amare's only game is outside jumpers unless a blown defensive coverage allows him an occasional DUNK.
Pick and roll with NASH is rendered USELESS.

Aldridge can put up big numbers....So you have the SUNS defense chasing Miller all night and afraid he can virtually get any shot he wants and a sharpshooter in Rudy who only managed 5 points last game and PORTLAND STILL WON.

The SUNS worst nightmare was being matched up to play Portland in the opening round. Without Lopez the Suns only chance of getting out of the first round is a miracle.

Derrick Stafford is in PHOENIX tonight

Derrick Stafford is in PHOENIX tonight

Portland has lost once since Jan 2008 SU with this man blowing the whistle. The only loss was to LEBRON. They have beaten :

DALLAS
PHOENIX
LAKERS

Interestingly enough all three of those wins were as
DOGS and the spread for all three games was -8.5.

Home Fav of 8.5 on the year is (6-14 ATS).
Home Fav of PK to -10 is a beautiful (14-32 ATS).

Guys who knows on any given night in the NBA anything can happen but I surely like information that favors one way or the other.

do you really take into account the refs records with similiar spreads when looking at a game?

Phoenix
Nice reading and I have watched every gm of the Sun this yr......Miller....can't shoot ....especially a 3. He shot well is gm 1 but is all bent out of hell behind the arc. Look for the Suns to give him the 3 anytime he wants it tonight. Good Luck w/ur plays but I am on the other side taking Phx -8.5.....oh by the way on Lopez , can't stand him, I wish we would ghave taken his brother instead, he has no move to call his own....he does bang the boards but many of the guys out weigh him and when a body is thrown on him he is ineffective. AND HE NEEDS A DAMN HAIRCUT

King,

Great write-up. Talked me off the Phoenix side. I really didn't think Portland had a chance in this series before reading that, even after stealing game one.

For anyone who is still tuning into TNT, they've got the NBATV broadcast of the Phx/Por game with the studio doing commentary. Kenny and Charles basically reiterating, almost word-for-word, what you wrote about the Suns matchup problems with those certain Port players. They pointed out that Gentry has Grant Hill guarding Miller now, certainly a better defender than Nash, though with his old legs we'll see if it makes the difference. I still think the Suns pull this one out, with their backs up against the wall, but I do agree that the 8.5 points was way too much. No play on the game for me, but I just wanted to point out the stellar job you did of breaking this one down King.

Roy looked good. He is the difference. Lets see the line for game 5 in PHX. Gonna be a nice dog for Portland. Got a gut feeling Portland finishes them off in game 6 at home.
