I always thought rocky long was a decent coach right up until that point. it made no goddamn sense not to kick the fg and go up 5. you could make the argument if it was 4th and short, because of the way they were running the ball. but 4th and 5? and to call a pass play that clearly wasn't going to work?
the more I watched that game, the more I realized that it is good for sd st that bob toledo is retiring. clearly the man knows nothing about football. they were having a lot of success running the ball and every time the qb dropped back to pass, it felt like it was as likely to end up in navy's hands as it was in his teammate's hands. yet toledo insisted on throwing the ball. when the qb made an accurate throw, the receivers were so shocked that they had a bunch of drops. and every time they went empty backfield.... to not even have the THREAT of the run.... you knew there was zero chance of the play succeeding.
the sd st defense (players and staff) should just kick the shit out of the offensive staff. that defense did a GREAT job against the option and they deserved to win that game. but the offensive play calling seemed to have one goal... make sure we lose this game.
yeah, I knew going in that he was horrible. but I figured they had the freakin' common sense to keep the ball out of his hands and just pound the shit out of that navy front 7. obviously I was incorrect.
