ssd, where did you spend your time there? My wife and I spent a wonderful week there a couple of years ago, and loved the country and the people. We booked our own trip with a local agent and saw some amazing things. Would love to go back some day.

Cool trip. My family physician spends six weeks there every summer, unpaid, at her own expense, to bring medical care to the boonies. Last summer she took her 16 yo son and a friend who is a dental tech along.

I once asked her why she does this.

She said that she believes that is the reason God diverted her from wildlife biology to medicine.

I don't have to accept her religion to think she's a great doc and a fantastic human being.

Chadman:
Escazu, suburb of San Jose, for a week - looked at a few houses.

Guanacaste and Manuel Antonio for the rest.

Muff:
A family member of mine does the same in Guatemala - fixing cleft palates - but not because of God - she just think it is a good way to give back.

It's nice to know people like that. It's the action that counts, not the motivation.

SSD,

My neice and her husband are leaving for Costa Rica in the morning. Can you tell me what service you used for international calls from Costa Rica to the U.S.?

Thanks!

Nevermind, SSD. This evening, they upgraded one of their Verizon plans/phones for global calling.

We spent three days in Manuel Antonio, a couple in Arenal near the volcano (toured the area) and Monteverde up in the rain forest. Was an amazing trip. The zipline and jungle swing in Monteverde is still the most exciting thing I've ever done.

Honestly, Trench - I think i made about 3 calls back here but I put Skype on my Droid and it cost $0.038 cents per minute.

Chad - I really enjoyed the trip and think I will be retiring there.

ssd, have you been there before, or was this your first time? I'm guessing if you are considering retiring there you may have been there before. I was incredibly impressed by the people there. Very proud, very family oriented, very much concerned with keeping their homes clean and nice, and the kids are well-dressed. From what I saw, the people took great pride in themselves and their country. I never went to San Jose, and I've heard some horror stories about that area - some I know to be true from close friends. But to think that you could live in a country like that and be able to experience a wonderful beach/ocean area - actually several including the Atlantic and Caribbean sides - an amazing mountain/rainforest area, and the volcano and surrounding areas that are wonderful, all within relatively short trips... I agree it could be a wonderful place to retire. I'd like to learn a bit more about the San Jose area - we flew into Liberia (which was a horrible "cattle-call" airport experience), and I can imagine there must be some good things about parts of San Jose and the outskirts. Did you see anything around there that was enticing?
