considering i have played baseball my whole life and was actually a pitcher going into college, BUT, can someone answer me how Benitez is credit with a save in todays game>>

It was always my understanding that to get a save you have to be leading by a number of runs that can be reached by the opposing team with the given number of batters that are guaranteed to get an at bat.

The bases were loaded and 2 outs.....Reds down 5, Benitez comes in and gets the final batter. If the batter gets a grand slam they are still down one. How is that a save??? If the margin was 4, then I can see it, as he "saved" the victory. That is why closers dont come in save situations unless the margin is 3 or less at the start of an inning.

Someone know the answer to this?

Was thinking the same thing when the announcer said that Benitez got the save. Gimme a break, it was 7-2.
Anyhow, I was just worried about the under  especially bringing Benitez in.

Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

1.He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
2.He is not the winning pitcher; and
3.He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
a. He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
b. He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or
c. He pitches effectively for at least three innings.
