I'm trying to make a case for the Jets...

...and I can't.

I'm looking at this from every angle I can, and I can't find a legitimate reason to take the Jets.

Motivation:
Tennessee has a chance to take the lead alone in their division, giving them a chance at a first-round bye in the process. NY's season is done; all they can do is play the spoiler. Possibly you could argue Tennessee may overlook this game with Indy on deck next. Unlikely however, I think.

Performance:
Tennessee has lost just twice this year. Both defeats were against teams which are top-echelon clubs (Indianapolis and New England). They've had a couple scares. such as last week @ Atlanta...but they came back nicely in that game and took control. Jacksonville kept it close the whole way, but it appears the Jags defence is improving. The Jets don't have a defence that is anywhere near comparable to that at this point in the season. In all but two games this year the Titans have put up 25 points or more. 25 points scored should be enough to win most games, and certainly looks possible here.

The Jets have just four wins...all against losing clubs, which vary in talent from mediocre to awful (Buffalo, Houston, Oakland, Jacksonville). Only the Buffalo win was decisive. Against good clubs they have routinely lost by 7 pts or more, be it home or away. They've played very few clubs in the past 8 weeks with good defences. Buf...Hou...Phil...NYG...Oak...Indy...Jax. Very few good defences there. Buf, Phil and Indy all defend the pass reasonably well (better than the Titans), but none of those 7 teams comes close to stopping the run as well as Tennessee.

Titans come in with 6 straight wins, and 8 of 9. Jets have performed marginally better of late, winning 2 of 3 and 4 of 7, after starting 0-4.

Stats:
I'm not a big statistical handicapper...but...Tennessee has a huge edge in turnover ratio, and that's important. I'll let someone else go into all the numbers...they mostly favor Tennessee I am sure. I've gotten away from handicapping games this way because when I get too heavy into the numbers I start losing. But it works for others.

Matchups:
The Jets DO defend against the pass somewhat well; better than most of the opponents Tenn has faced. Jets are horrible against the run. The Titans running game has started to show a little more promise of late.

On the other side of the ball...the Jets have had trouble running all year long, and Tenn is the best at stopping the run. Titans pass D may be a bit vulnerable.

So it appears both teams should be throwing the ball a lot, trying to exploit each other's weaknesses. But at least Tennessee CAN run the ball if they have to (I think), whereas NYJ should have extreme difficulty on the ground.

The Betting Line:
You know, sometimes you see a line and just feel it's wrong. I won't call it a "sucker" line...but it looks a little too easy, and it isn't. TB on SNF may have been one of those. Sometimes you get the feeling the linemaker is just screwing with your head. He probably is. You bet on a line that looks so easy, it loses. The next time you think twice before you do that. Then you start going against yourself, taking teams you think will lose or don't like, and before you know it you're all f*cked up and haven't got a clue what direction you're going in.

I think most Joe Public players will be all over Tennessee. But in this case I think they've got a winner. For those of us who are primarily dog-players --- we can get so wrapped up in contrarianism at times that I think maybe we tend to overthink things and overlook the obvious. I mean, sometimes it just is what it is. (I don't know if this is making any sense or if I am just over-tired, but it makes sense to me). This game, I think, is one of those games that I think just is what it is. A Titans win and cover.

The Titans are the better team, with a purpose and a goal...a top-tier team. They had their scare last week and survived it. I'm inclined to believe that they are strong enough and well-prepared enough, that they do not cough up what should be a fairly easy win.

I don't know, I see a line like this, I go hunting for why it's where it's at. I don't think Tenn -4 to -4? would be unreasonable. I'll take it.

Strong play for me.

Good luck all.

very cogent post. good stuff.
personally, i would never bet against the jets in an underdog role, but thats just me. we all have our little betting axioms and philosophies that we abide by.
but youre dead on with a lot of your points.

Well, ok....give me a reason! :D

They're a MNF home dog. Ok. There's one.

I did actually point out a couple of reasons to consider the Jets. NY can probably throw the ball on Tenn. Titans may look past this game (maybe). There are a few reasons to back NYJ. Just not enough for me.

I'm am not putting the L word on this one, or any game for that matter. Hey, I am wrong a lot. In this case though I think I have a better-than-average chance of being right. There are no sure things, but I like the odds here.

+3...+2.5?????????

Damn!!...Still plenty of Tenn -1.5, -2's out there!!

Volek, while no McNair(!), still more tha capable.

Seriously like the over here (42).....Neither team rush well and Tenn pass D statistically quite bad......lots of passing here which must lead to scoring surely!!!

Still think the Titans come out on top tho, Gm.

Good Luck.

"the bunker"
on mcnair...nothing definitive

on mcnair...nothing definitive

NASHVILLE, TN, Nov. 29, 2003 (AP) -- Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair threw a few passes Saturday and tested his strained right calf by moving around a little.

He said he was trying to be optimistic but doesn't want to set himself up for a letdown.

"I'm just going to keep an open mind right now to where I can improve even more in the next two days," said McNair, who watched most of the nearly two-hour practice with his right calf on ice. "I'm just staying positive that I am going to play."

Coach Jeff Fisher said the decision won't be made until Monday night before kickoff against the New York Jets (4-7).

"The risk is obvious," Fisher said. "If you subject him to further injury, then you'll lose him for a number of weeks."

McNair strained his calf in the Titans' 38-31 victory over Atlanta on Nov. 23.

Defensive end Jevon Kearse, who sprained his left ankle two weeks ago, also will be a game-time decision after having his best day since the injury, the coach said.

gametime weather projection.....around 36 degrees....winds at 20-25 mph(the wind chill should be significantly lower than 36).....

a raw night to say the least...

just to give my $.02.

i will make a bet on the jets. here are some of the reasons:

1. on the road, tenn. allows a poor 13.3 yppt & a very poor 61.8 completion % on defense.

2. at home the jets allow an excellent 20.4 yppt on defense. and on offense, the jets complete an excellent 64.6% completion of their passes.

3. tenn. has a division showdown with indy next week. in addition to mcnair being hurt, kearse did not play last week & is questionable this week. also tenn. best corner, rolle, got a concussion in last weeks game is expected to play tonite. but don't you think that fischer may sit these players if their health becomes questionable during tonite's game & make sure that they will be ready for next weeks showdown ?

4. tonight we have a very hot team in tenn.(9-2) playing a team that is 4-7 & is only favored by 1-3 points. imo, this smells fishy.

5. play against - road teams where the line is +3 to -3 (tenn.) - off a road win, with a winning record in the second half of the season... ats record is 30-11 over the last 10 seasons ? 73.2%.

i'm not having a great season, so don't change your bet based on this post, but i will make a bet on the jets. to me its the only way to go.

good luck

given the weather conditions,

given the weather conditions,

the nature of mcnair`s injury(calf strain),and the pending indy showdown,i`d be a little surprised if mcnair starts tonight.....i`d say that unless that injury is well along in it`s recovery process,it`s very possible, maybe even probable that he`ll aggravate the injury.....not a doctor, but i had chronic hamstring problems back in the day and trying to come back to soon can be a disaster....they`d be smart to take their chances with volek and let mcnair have another week....

that opinion and a buck will get you a cup of coffee at 7/11....

If the fact that Volek is most likely the QB isn't enough reason then you can't ever be convinced. Pennington vs. Volek? Hmmm...I'll take my chances with the home team.

Has Volek ever started a NFL game? Look how Hasselback did in his first game as a starter with the Redskin's yesterday against NO. Not good...

I can't buy into the fact that Tenn. is getting their running game going. Put 8 men in the box tonight and make Volek be a hero....

Taking the Jets and the points. Right now at 3 with double vig at some joints. Im not the type to pay extra without getting something for my money - this lines already moved over a point or so, just set it and make the price the same for both sides. If you cant do that I'd take the ML on the dog, sheesh.

I'll wait and get it at normal -110 or possible even money, just like balt -3 yesterday as well as denver - 3.

The real wildcard in this one is the weather and how effective the offenses can be. Rolle cant cover Moss and with Evans back in the lineup I also expect Marvin to put a few hat to hat hits on Eddie.

First, great post as always. Well thought out, well written.

But I would say there is always a reason to take the Jets -- they never quit. These guys consistently play hard. That's not something you can say about that many teams in the NFl. Herm Edwards is a great coach and his guys always fight their asses off. Add to that Pennington, who just gets the job done, and you have an effective team, even without a ton of talent.

That said, I have no idea whether i'll take them tonight. Haven't looked at it enough yet. But I probably will.

A couple of reasons to consider the Jets.

A couple of reasons to consider the Jets.

1. My numbers indicate a close game. In fact I have tenn as a one point favorite for the game. NYJ defense should be considered in this matchup. Shut down Eddie George, who has not had a break out game all year, and force McNair or Vollek to pass, in the cold windy weather...
2. The trends that you have posted for the week indicate the Jets to be a play. If I recall correctly you also pointed out the S.Diego backdoor... Trends #s 9, 18 and 21 point to the under and JETS.
3. Motiviation will be next week in the Division showdown.
4. Home Team monday night.
5. If I recall correctly only on road favorite covered yesterday, the uh, ummm, the Philly Eagles...The trend to the non cover road favorite is coming back in line, after the hot start of the season.
6. While not a play of the week, I would consider this just above for amusement only.

Thanks GM
