If you are only using your wireless connection to get on the internet, check email, etc., DO NOT BUY 802.11g. Buy 802.11b. It will give you the EXACT SAME PERFORMANCE. I know this stuff pretty well and I have noticed that there is a lot of deceptive marketing out there. For instance in a Best Buy ad I saw an 802.11b access point for $30 and an 802.11g access point for $80. The marketing was touting the faster connection speed of 802.11g but for your internet connection, the speed is EXACTLY THE SAME.
The reason for this is that your DSL connects at around 100 Kbps while 802.11b hits 11,000 Kbps and 802.11g hits 54,000 Kbps. The bottleneck is with your DSL connection, not your wireless setup. The bottom line is that you are getting the exact same performance with 802.11b and 802.11g, but 802.11b is far, far cheaper right now.
