Sebastien Charpentier will start in goal for the Capitals tonight, according to the Washington Post. With a strong performance, Charpentier could solidify his spot as the No. 2 goalie, as starter Olaf Kolzig is expected to return by this weekend.

Viktor Kozlov didn't skate Monday because of a rib injury but was back on the ice Tuesday and said that he will play tonight, according to the Miami Herald.

Martin Straka is expected to make his season debut for the Penguins tonight. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Straka will work on the second line with Jan Hrdina and Alexandre Daigle

The Montreal Gazette reports that Donald Audette will probably be traded before he plays another game for the Canadiens. Audette met with Habs coach Michel Therrien and learned that he will continue to watch games from the press box as a healthy scratch.

Brendan Shanahan missed the Red Wings' game on Tuesday because he was attending a funeral in Toronto, according to the AP.

Mikko Eloranta was helped off the ice during the Kings' game on Tuesday after suffering a knee injury. He will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

Ken Belanger left in the first period of the Kings' game on Tuesday and did not return. The club thinks he suffered a concussion following a collision with the Sharks' John Jakopin


Craig Conroy did not play for the Flames on Tuesday after blocking a slap shot with his left foot on Monday, according to the AP. X-rays on his foot were negative.

For Sergei Samsonov, there will be no Motown homecoming tomorrow night.

Nearly three weeks after he suffered a sprain and bone bruises in his right wrist, Samsonov practiced with the Bruins yesterday for the first time since he was hurt during overtime of a match in Calgary. The B's darting left winger will not accompany the team this afternoon to Detroit for tomorrow night's clash with the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

``(Tomorrow) is out,'' Samsonov said after yesterday's practice at the FleetCenter. ``Next is Saturday. It's been like this for about two weeks now. But it's getting better, I can tell.''

While he missed the chance to play in Detroit, where he starred for the IHL Detroit Vipers in 1996-97 - the year before he joined the Bruins and won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie - Samsonov hopes to be ready to go against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night at the FleetCenter.

Samsonov was off to a strong start, with 2-4-6 totals in four games playing on the B's No. 1 line with Joe Thornton and Glen Murray. All three players, plus center Brian Rolston, are listed on the Eastern Conference All-Star ballot.

Watching Samsonov in practice yesterday, he was certainly moving as well as ever. His ability to shoot and pass remained somewhat impaired.

``It's getting there,'' Samsonov said. ``I feel it when I shoot. It's sore. But at least I could do (some shooting). It's a good sign. But I don't want to overdo it and hurt it again. It's fairly easy to re-injure.

``The biggest thing is I'm not going to take 20-30 shots in a game like I do in practice. No, the biggest thing is when you go into the corner and battle for the puck. I think that's where it might hurt me. So the way we're looking at it now is to get another couple of days rest and see what happens Saturday.''

The good news is that Samsonov, despite missing three weeks-plus, will not have lost a great deal of conditioning.

``I feel like I'm in good shape in terms of conditioning, so that when I come back it's not going to be an issue,'' he said. ``I'm sure I'll have to get my timing back with passing and shooting, but it's not going to be nearly as hard to do as it would have been if I wasn't able to skate.''

If Bruins coach Robbie Ftorek holds true to form, Samsonov may well be held out of action even after he feels he's ready to play. Ftorek always chooses caution to protect his valuable assets.

``He's not ready,'' Ftorek said. ``He's looking good, he's looking great. But he's just not ready. It's one of those injuries that's going to take some time.

``He was skating (yesterday), but he wasn't doing anything. He was a backchecker, he was doing some penalty killing and things like that, things where he could skate and use his good hand and still get the pace. I know he'd rather do that than work with (strength and conditioning coach John) Whitesides.''

Samsonov was happy at least to be able to take part in practice, instead of having to go onto the ice before the rest of his mates and be put through a rigorous workout by the demanding Whitesides.

``Skating with the team was obviously a lot more fun than skating on my own,'' Samsonov said. ``I'd like to get in a couple of full practices before I play, anyway. So it's probably a smart thing just to stay home, get it healed and try for Saturday.''

Roy has a sore left hip, which he said has some fluid buildup he's trying to relieve with medication. He won't play tonight against the Ottawa Senators at the Pepsi Center. Backup David Aebischer will start for the second consecutive game.


Aebischer played twice against the Senators last season, winning a game at home and losing on the road. The Swiss youngster is looking for his first victory of the season (0-1-0-2), as are the Avs at the Pepsi Center (0-2-3).


Power-play outage: The Avalanche is only 3-for-35 (8.6 percent) on the power play at the Pepsi Center. That is the second-worst figure in the NHL. Overall, Colorado has an 11.4 percent success rate on the power play, also the league's second worst.

PK blues: The Avs' penalty killing has slipped to 81.5 percent, just 23rd in the league.

Lalime in net: The Senators will start Patrick Lalime tonight in goal.
