Quinnipiac?s Umar Shannon out for season

Quinnipiac?s worst fears were realized on Friday when the school announced that guard Umar Shannon will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.

Shannon was injured in Thursday night?s loss 72-70 loss to Siena. The graduate student, who transfered to Quinnipiac before the season will undergo knee surgery on Wednesday. The Bobcats begin play in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament next weekend.

Shannon was averaging 14.3 points, 2.3 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game after deciding to use his final year of eligibility at Quinnipiac. Shannon?s season had several highlights, but none bigger than his game-winning three to beat Niagara last weekend. He concludes his career with 1,307 points and 226 assists.

Head coach Tom Moore called it ?very unfortunate? to see Shannon?s college career end with an injury.

Quinnipiac concludes the regular season on Sunday at Marist.

guess we will see how long and bad the ankle is?

The Boise State men's basketball team will be without its top scorer Saturday at Wyoming, as junior Anthony Drmic appeared during warmups in street clothes. Drmic (17.9 points per game) injured his ankle midway through the second half Wednesday in a loss at Fresno State.

La.Tech gets Raheem Appleby back for title push

There were so many storylines stemming from Louisiana Tech?s massive home win over Middle Tennessee that Raheem Appleby?s return was kind of lost in translation.

The truth is, his return after a 12-game hiatus may arguably be the biggest news to come from the win.

Appleby played just five minutes in Tech?s victory, which forced a four-way tie atop the conference standings, but his presence was more inspirational than anything.

?It was great,? said junior Michale Kyser. ?You could see the crowd when everyone stood up. Just seeing him out there playing some minutes was great.?

Appleby made his first appearance since a Jan. 9 ankle injury at the 9:14 mark to a standing ovation. He played three minutes before returning to the bench to stretch his ankle with a band, then played another two minutes in the second half and missed a runner off the glass.

The production wasn?t there, but that?s a given. Appleby wasn?t even expected to play, but he felt good enough after three straight days of practice to give it a go.

?The ankle isn?t bad,? Appleby said Saturday. ?I?m just not playing like I normally play. I?m not comfortable. I think that?s what it was.?

The good news is Appleby experienced no setbacks and will be available again to play today against UAB. His minutes are unclear, although Tech ideally would like to ramp up his court time during the next few weeks before the Conference USA tournament.

?I just go out there when (Tech coach Michael White) tells me or if he needs me to,? Appleby said. ?I?m not trying to push myself to get more minutes and force myself out there, I?m just falling into a role.?

It?s somewhat weird to think of Appleby as ?falling into a role,? but that?s what he?s limited to. While his ankle may be fine, the heavy tape job to prevent re-injury limits his game of using his quickness to get to the basket.

However, if Tech wants to make a run in the C-USA tournament, it will need Appleby. The Bulldogs appear fine without him playing much of a role and were 9-3 as he watched from the sideline. There?s no denying his presence, though, considering he led the team in scoring at 16 points per game before his injury.

Naturally, as Appleby?s minutes increase, the playing time of Speedy Smith, Jaron Johnson and Kenyon McNeail, who have flourished with Appleby out, will decrease some.

?We will continue to try and increase his minutes, but at the same time, some of these other guys are in such a good rhythm that you have to be careful and try to balance it the best that you can,? White said. ?We have a big one in front of us, and I have a lot of faith in these other guards and what they have been able to accomplish in the last seven weeks without Raheem. At the same time, I know what Raheem can do when he is at full strength. We will definitely throw him out there against UAB and he may play a few more minutes.?

this is great info.....but in the end, does it matter???

on the road
no drimc
marks doesn't score a basket until 50 seconds left
boise trails 15-0 to start game 5 mins in

and boise end up covering and winning by dd (granted wyo was also without it's best player but think he's been out a few games)

Several weapons emerging down stretch for Golden Eagles

A month ago, it wasn?t clear whether or not Southern Miss head coach Donnie Tyndall would have enough weapons at his disposal to make it down the stretch in the regular season and beyond.

And when senior forward Michael Craig went down with an ankle injury about three weeks ago against Middle Tennessee, more question marks sprang up.

How would the Golden Eagles replace the production of their leading rebounder and second-leading scorer?

How would the team respond to the loss of one of its undisputed leaders?

Another concern around that time was whether Neil Watson and Jerrold Brooks would be able to shoulder the load in the backcourt for a full season.

Found its stride

But as the Golden Eagles have made their way down the stretch over the past week or two, the team has resolved any issues it might have had, and appears to have found its stride at the right time.

Southern Miss will take on Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m. today at Boca Raton, Fla., in the penultimate contest of the regular season. After today?s game, only a road matchup versus Tulane is left before the Conference USA Tournament.

In response to how the Golden Eagles would replace Craig?s production, the emergence of Aaron Brown and Matt Bingaya has eased the minds of the curious. Since Craig went down, Bingaya has been a revelation. Brown doesn?t necessarily play Craig?s position, but his production over the past three games has made up for the big man?s absence.

But back to Bingaya. He?s scored 20 or more points in each of the past two games after spending most of the season as basically a role player. However, it didn?t take an expert eye to recognize Bingaya?s potential. His athleticism has been apparent all season, but his minutes have been limited because he?s been behind Brown and Craig.

Now that he?s been given the opportunity to step into the lineup, it?ll be interesting to see how Tyndall utilizes him going forward.

Houston steps up

Then, there?s Deonte Houston. Watson and Brooks are good at both guard spots, but if Southern Miss was going to get where it wants to go, it would need not just a capable back-up, but one that provides little-to-no dropoff at the position.

And Houston?s been the guy. He might not put up the numbers Watson and Brooks do, but he does the little things necessary to get the job done.
