UPDATE: SUNDAY
looks like today may be the day for the Penguins in the sun....
All but eliminated from postseason contention, the Chicago Blackhawks must be looking forward to their final meeting of the season with the lowly Pittsburgh Penguins.
Though they have won nine of the last 12 meetings with the Penguins at the United Center, the Blackhawks are sitting 14 points behind Edmonton for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot.
Everything went wrong for the Blackhawks on Saturday as they were embarrassed 8-1 by Colorado. Jason Strudwick scored the lone goal for Chicago, which has lost 12 of its last 15.
The Blackhawks once again played without No. 1 goaltender Jocelyn Thibault, who is experiencing post-concussion syndrome and wont be re-evaluated for another week.
Craig Andersson gave up five goals in his second career start for the Blackhawks, before being pulled in favor of Steve Passmore in the second period.
Pittsburgh, which is tied with Carolina for the fewest points in the Eastern Conference, is suffering through a 15-game winless streak (0-14-1), and will miss the playoffs for the second straight season.
Friday's 3-1 loss in New Jersey clinched the second-longest winless streak in Penguins history. The team record is an 18-game slide (0-17-1) from Jan. 2-Feb. 10, 1983.
``I think awful tough was a few games ago,'' Penguins center Kent Manderville said. ``I think it's beyond awful tough. I had my thesaurus out a while ago trying to find different ways to describe it. I guess I need a new thesaurus.''
I didn't even know Kent Manderville read...???
Mario Lemieux has gone six games without a goal and has just two points over that span.
