The founding fathers did come up with the elecdtorial college, to deal with a young nation that was.....
1. Comprised of 13 large and small states, jealous of their own rights and suspecious of any central national govt.
2. Only 4 million people barely connected by transportation and communication. ( national campaigns were impractical then)
3. Comprised of many folks who believed that political parties were michievious if not downright evil.
The structure of the electorial college can be traced to the Centurial Assembly system of the Roman Republic.
The first design of the electorial college lasted through only 4 presidential elections. In the meantime political parties had emerged. The very people who had been condeming parties publicly, had been building them privately. Since then there have been several federal and state statutory changes which affect both time and mannor of choosing presidential electors.

Myself, I think we have a pretty good system the way it stands. Besides with the formation of outfits like the CFR and the Federal reserve over the years....I think the big money shot callers would still be buying off politicians and calling the shots anyway.
