if anybody thinks that these maniacs aren't serious...they're kidding themselves.

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has been working closely with Iran to develop its long-range ballistic missiles, possibly using Chinese technology, and is building large bases to prepare for their deployment, a South Korean state-run think tank said.

Communist North Korea is also building new sites near the Demilitarized Zone border for short-range missiles and is deploying missiles with improved precision that can strike most of Japan, the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) said in a report.

"The development of Taepodong-2 is conducted jointly with Iran, and it is possible China's technology is used in the development of the Taepodong-2 engine," said the IFANS report, which Reuters obtained on Thursday.

The collaboration is part of an international network, including Pakistan, that made it possible for the impoverished North to develop and deploy missiles despite scarce resources and limited testing, the study said.

North Korea fired seven missiles on July 5, including the long-range Taepodong-2, which U.S. officials said failed seconds into its flight and fell into waters between Japan and the Korean peninsula.

Christopher Hill, the top U.S. envoy to talks on the North's nuclear program, said last month one or more Iranians watched the North's missile launch, deepening concerns about the ties between two countries with troubling nuclear capabilities.

The Taepodong-2 is the product of joint efforts with Tehran, coinciding with Iran's development of the Shehab-5 and 6, and "it is highly possible that design and technology from China, which has an arms trade with Iran, were used", the report said.

The North is building a missile command base 50 km (30 miles) north of the Demilitarized Zone for as many as 30 mobile launch pads for the short-range Scud-type Hwasong missiles that can hit military and industrial targets deep in the South, IFANS said.

"With the deployment of Rodong and SSN-6 missiles and the pursuit to deploy the Taepodong-2, the North is pushing ahead with the construction of new sites and silos" on the east coast and on the border with China, the IFANS report said.

If that's somewhat directed at me, please don't misunderstand my posts in the other thread.

One thing I strongly believe though, is that there are very few, if any, tenable military options that would succeed in destroying the nuke programs of those countries. Going around blowing shit up in those countries will not work.

I'm just being realistic and I think that if one thinks these options through to their predicable conclusion, they would agree.

The first reaction is, 'hey, we're the mighty USA, we can do anything we want and we will succeed.'

You would think that after Vietnam, Korea, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan(I know, Wayne and weasel, it was the media in all of those) we would have taken a slightly different mindset.

We have the best military, but we do not have the ability to control the world, as has been proven time after time.

no..it wasn't directed at you...just the general audience.

of course you are correct....but it doesn't seem that you can logically talk to these leaders & when you do get some kind of agreement...nobody seems to keep it.

bottom line--is i hope you're right.

but i'm afraid that we may see a draft again.

I dont think Congress would ever let a draft measure through. No matter the circumstances. Just my opinion. I think the days of drafting are over.

I dont think that its right that we, in my opionion, are done with a draft. i just think that the political climate of the day wouldnt allow one. i mean, do you think that 2/3 of senate would pass a draft measure. i know that republicans control congress, for the time being, but the senate is so partsian and ineffective that the good of the country has become an afterthought. not a single democrat, except liberman, would vote in favor of a draft, and some republicans wouldnt either. IMHO its just not about the good of the country anymore for those people, its about politics. and it seems to me that politics today is too, for lack of a better word, PUSSY to get real things done.
if we engage in another military front, you would think we would need a draft and surley congress would pass a measure to enact one. but you would also think that they could have the good of the country in mind to do something about the invasion on our southern border-but they dont. why? politics.

Intitute a draft now and the war is over and mr boosh knows it. The enlistment age is 42 years old. That is not a typo. 42 years old. The training has been reduced to fit these geriatrics and they still can't meet quotas. They're not Ameican Gis anymore, they're American mercenaries. Nobody will show up for a military draft call. In the early 50's, the US recruited German SS vets, French Legionaire vets and Hungarian fighters to start the Special Forces. Today, a foreigner can start the naturalization process the day he or she puts on a uniform no matter how they get to the recruiter. Draft ??
