Another roadside bomb killed one soldier and wounded 10 near the northern city of Kirkuk.
.................................................................................

Can someone explain to me how they are doing this ?

Are these mines planted in the roads ? These must be powerfull bombs to damage military vehicles.

There have to be other vehicles going up and down the roads. Why are we being hit with these so often ?

Or are they bombs left on the side and detonated as the troops go by them ?

This makes me sick how much this is happening.

I thought these reports were referring to car suicide bombs, but I could be wrong. Even if there is some unexploded ordinance laying around from previous battle/bombing, I don't think it would be spontaneously exploding now.

I could and may be totally wrong, but I believe the roadside bombs to be the one's that are controlled via remote. So that makes them deadly because they are activated at the right time, and without any visual clues.

There commonly called IED's.I had two former students in my office this week. There stationed in Iraq.We had them them talk to our freshman social studies classes. Both are being sent back this week. But their greatest fear there are the IED's.Both students just graduated lyr.I pasted something about the road sign bombs below......

Once consisting of rocket-propelled grenades or mortar rounds set to explode with a timing device, the bombs are becoming more complex and deadly. Some comprise several 155mm artillery shells connected together and planted either on the side of the road or buried in the ground along a dirt track used by US troops. The militants, hidden up to 500 yards away, wait until a target passes by and then detonate the bomb using a command wire.

"Definitely the IEDs [Improvised Explosive Devices] are the preferred method to engage the coalition forces," says Capt. Josh Felker of the 4th Infantry Division. "They are even using cellular phones or pagers to detonate bombs, so they can be miles away at the time," he says, adding that the number of bombs exploded or discovered since April is "well into the hundreds."

The militants have begun encasing the bombs in concrete to resemble curb stones. The bombs are planted beside the road and are almost impossible to detect.

An internal memo to the CPA notes that roadside bombs are on the increase partly because there are not enough US troops and Iraqi police to patrol the province's numerous remote roads.

"This allows the Iraqi enemy to emplace their IEDs during the night and then detonate them during the day when the coalition forces are traveling," the memo says. "Currently it seems that not only are the Iraqis attacking the coalition forces but they are also attacking the Iraqi police and the ICDC [Iraqi Civil Defense Corps]. Many of our ICDC are leaving their jobs because they are scared of being attacked."

The increased police strength will allow the creation of a highway patrol to deter militants from planting bombs, Greig says

Thanks for responses.

Man if they are setting these things off with cell phones no wonder its killing our men and woman.

I don't see any way in the world to stop that crap.

When you just stop and think about how many mortors, bombs, etc that Saddam had accumulated over the years, this could go on for many years.

Its demoralizing and I am just sitting behind a computer.

Nasty stuff. Mines are to. Most times when you see them it's to late. The old bouncing betty rip you apart. You dont need tanks war planes or special gagets. Just guts and hate. They seem to have both. We value life and they don't. They use that as a weapon. Some of our equipment is not as tough as it should be. The hummer is becoming a death trap.

Honestly I thought there would be more of this happening when we first started going through the cities......

Reminds me of a story....I can't remember the exact origin......story was about a guy whose car blew up on him on the way to work.....guy was killed.....a short ways from the mangled car authorities found a car along side the road with a garage door type remote control with the button taped down...

authorities surmise that whoever wanted him dead realized that he took the same way to work everyday, planted the bomb on the car and planted the other car along side the road with the remote control.....he drove into the field of frequency generated by the remote control, which set off the bomb....

anybody else hear of this story....Is this theoretically possible.....how long would the remote put out a signal?
