Is Cheney Betting On Economic Collapse?

By MIKE WHITNEY

Wouldn't you like to know where Dick Cheney puts his money? Then you'd know whether his "deficits don't matter" claim is just baloney or not.

Well, as it turns out, Kiplinger Magazine ran an article based on Cheney's financial disclosure statement and, sure enough, found out that the VP is lying to the American people for the umpteenth time. Deficits do matter and Cheney has invested his money accordingly.

The article is called "Cheney's betting on bad news" and provides an account of where Cheney has socked away more than $25 million. While the figures may be estimates, the investments are not. According to Tom Blackburn of the Palm Beach Post, Cheney has invested heavily in "a fund that specializes in short-term municipal bonds, a tax-exempt money market fund and an inflation protected securities fund. The first two hold up if interest rates rise with inflation. The third is protected against inflation.

Cheney has dumped another (estimated) $10 to $25 million in a European bond fund which tells us that he is counting on a steadily weakening dollar. So, while working class Americans are loosing ground to inflation and rising energy costs, Darth Cheney will be enhancing his wealth in "Old Europe". As Blackburn sagely notes, "Not all bad news' is bad for everybody."

This should put to rest once and for all the foolish notion that the "Bush Economic Plan" is anything more than a scam aimed at looting the public till. The whole deal is intended to shift the nation's wealth from one class to another. It's also clear that Bush-Cheney couldn't have carried this off without the tacit approval of the thieves at the Federal Reserve who engineered the low-interest rate boondoggle to put the American people to sleep while they picked their pockets.

Reasonable people can dispute that Bush is "intentionally" skewering the dollar with his lavish tax cuts, but how does that explain Cheney's portfolio?

It doesn't. And, one thing we can say with metaphysical certainty is that the miserly Cheney would never plunk his money into an investment that wasn't a sure thing. If Cheney is counting on the dollar tanking and interest rates going up, then, by Gawd, that's what'll happen.

The Bush-Cheney team has racked up another $3 trillion in debt in just 6 years. The US national debt now stands at $8.4 trillion dollars while the trade deficit has ballooned to $800 billion nearly 7% of GDP.

This is lunacy. No country, however powerful, can maintain these staggering numbers. The country is in hock up to its neck and has to borrow $2.5 billion per day just to stay above water. Presently, the Fed is expanding the money supply and buying back its own treasuries to hide the hemorrhaging from the public. Its utter madness.

Last month the trade deficit climbed to $70 billion. More importantly, foreign central banks only purchased a meager $47 billion in treasuries to shore up our ravenous appetite for cheap junk from China.

Do the math! They're not investing in America anymore. They are decreasing their stockpiles of dollars. We're sinking fast and Cheney and his pals are manning the lifeboats while the public is diverted with gay marriage amendments and "American Celebrity".

The American manufacturing sector has been hollowed out by cutthroat corporations who've abandoned their country to make a fast-buck in China or Mexico. The $3 trillion housing (equity) bubble is quickly loosing air while the anemic dollar continues to sag. All the signs indicate that the economy is slowing at the same time that energy prices continue to rise.

This is the onset of stagflation; the dreaded combo of a slowing economy and inflation.

Did Americans really think they'd be spared the same type of economic colonization that has been applied throughout the developing world under the rubric of "neoliberalism"?

Well, think again. The American economy is barrel-rolling towards earth and there are only enough parachutes for Cheney and the gang.

The country has lost 3 million jobs from outsourcing since Bush took office; more than 200,000 of those are the high-paying, high-tech jobs that are the life's-blood of every economy.

Consider this from the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) June edition of Foreign Affairs, the Bible of globalists and plutocrats:

"Between 2000 and 2003 alone, foreign firms built 60,000manufacturing plants in China. European chemical companies, Japanese carmakers, and US industrial conglomerates are all building factories in China to supply export markets around the world. Similarly, banks, insurance companies, professional-service firms, and IT companies are building R&D and service centers in India to support employees, customers, and production worldwide." ("The Globally integrated Enterprise" Samuel Palmisano, Foreign Affairs page 130)

"60,000 manufacturing plants" in 3 years?!?

"Banks, insurance companies, professional-service firms, and IT companies"?

No job is safe. American elites and corporate tycoons are loading the boats and heading for foreign shores. The only thing they're leaving behind is the insurmountable debt that will be shackled to our children into perpetuity and the carefully arranged levers of a modern police-surveillance state.

Welcome to Bush's 21st Century gulag; third world luxury in a Guantanamo-type setting.

Take another look at Cheney's investment strategy; it tells the whole ugly story. Interest rates are going up, the middle class is going down, and the poor dollar is headed for the dumpster. The country is not simply teetering on the brink of financial collapse; it is being thrust headfirst by the blackguards in office and their satrapies at Federal Reserve.

Scotty when the sky does fall maybe some of you will take a good hard long look in the mirror and then sit down with your families and try to figure out why your part of the country continues to vote in this trash. Just a thought.

Wikipedia has Cheney's net worth estimated between $30 to $100 million (that's one hell of an estimate, huh?).

If it really is $30M, then the $25 million would be concerning. I doubt it's $30M since he makes about $8M per year from Halliburton.

If it's closer to $100M, this $25M report is useless.

Pretty old story, isn't it? I remember this - I think I posted it a long time ago. Would be interesting to see where his money has gone now.

I did take a good hard look in the mirror when I voted for George W. And what I seen on the other side was Al Gore. Seriously , can you imagine where we would be right now if Gore would have won. Holy chit. The inventor of the internet himself.

Think about reality Sponge and maybe you will see the light.

Scotty i know where we wouldn't be and that is in Iraq. By the way let me leave you with this. Go find me where Gore said he invented the internet. You want to be a sucker and believe he said that go for it. Did you ever hear of an Urban Legend? Scotty maybe its time guys like you and Weasel and a bunch of others step back and stop being played a fool. I think Jabber once called someone a Rove wet dream. Sitting and accusing someone for saying something they had never said because you were conned into thinking it by some deceitful agenda laden shitbag, makes you look pretty naive. Now the real story

Gore has been involved with the development of the Internet since the 1970s, first as a Congressman and later as Senator and Vice-President. Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn stated in the 2000 article "Al Gore and the Internet", that Gore was "the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development."[109] His High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991[110] (often referred to as the Gore Bill) was passed on December 9, 1991 and led to the National Information Infrastructure (NII)[111] which Gore referred to as the "information superhighway."

In a March 9, 1999 interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, Gore stated, "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."[112] This statement was often misquoted by media outlets and led to the creation of a widely spread urban legend that Gore claimed to have "invented the Internet."[113]

In response to the controversy, Cerf and Kahn argued that, "We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he 'invented' the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet."[114]

This is a big problem. Things like this lie are said and people believe it for years and years. The draft dodger Bush ran against two War Hero's and some people think the war hero's are trash and he should get a medal. The evil genius of Karl Rove.

No surprise here. If we had the game plan for the destruction of working America for the benifit of a few in our hands, and we had his wealth, we would all invest accordingly. This is a great example of why class envy is not overrated. You don't have to be to smart to bet on bad news but most of America may not have the balls but even if they did, they don't have the wealth to do it. Cheney is playing the oldest game in the book. Buy on bad, sell on good news. I think the Rev Wright would say, God has blessed Dick Cheney & damned the American People. What is wrong with this guy making money on the backs of The American People that he signed on to serve ? Cheney is a party first loyalist who couldn't wait to sign up but ran the other way 5 times when called to be a patriot. The American People pay this guy and suffer as he builds wealth on their backs. To Me; this is flat out insider trading ! Conflick of interest ! No ethics ! No regard or a hint of conscience for His fellow Americans. Treason ! Whats New ? :SIB This is not partisan, I have never voted for a democrat for president but I will this election. Obama could burn the country down and He couldn't do any more harm to the people that the republicans and the democrats have in recent years. We need change for the sake of change. We need change to wrestle our Country back from those on the left and right that have forgotten that they work for US ! We need change so that our FELLOW APATHETIC AMERICANS MAY WAKE UP. Flag waving, fake outrage, bumper stickers and fights over abortion, school prayer, gay marriage and imigration are not getting it done. Rebuplicans talk about the redistribution of wealth by the liberals. What about the redistribution of wealth to the oill companies & the the war profiteers ? What about no leadership the last 8yrs that gave our wealth, health & long term stability to the Chinese and our enemies in the Middle East ? The Republicans talk about being strong on terror. What about the economic terror they have turned a blind eye to. Economic terror that they have been sympathysers with our enemies foreign and domestic against working Americans ? When you raise your right hand and swear to defend the Constitution of The United Staes Of America, you are are supposed to defend the American People, right? Where is the leadership ? Where is the outrage ? It's a crule one but it's a joke.

What happened to the idea that the President and these other folks put their money in a "blind trust?" I remember Bush 41 saying that about his money in a debate in 1988. Was he right? Do they do that?

It's a nice idea in theroy but the only blind trust is the trust we put in our elected officials. There are no blind trust. Every squirrel knows where their nuts are.

Vice President and Mrs. Cheney filed their federal income tax return for 2006 today. The income tax return shows that the Cheneys owe federal taxes for 2006 of $413,326 on taxable income of $1,614,862. During the course of 2006 the Cheneys paid $464,789 in taxes through withholding and estimated tax payments. The Cheneys elected to apply the resulting $51,463 tax overpayment to their 2007 estimated tax payments. The wage and salary income reported on the tax return includes the Vice President's $208,575 government salary. In addition, the tax return reports a pension benefit of $27,500, which the Vice President received as a former director of Union Pacific Corporation. The Vice President became eligible for this benefit in 2006 when he turned 65. The tax return also reports Mrs. Cheney's book royalty income, which includes a partial royalty advance on a book she is writing about growing up in Wyoming. It also reports wage and salary income from her continuing work at the American Enterprise Institute and a pension benefit of $32,000, which she received as a former director of Reader's Digest. The amounts of the pension benefits received by the Vice President and by Mrs. Cheney are fixed and will not increase or decrease based on changes in the earnings or revenues of either company.

The Cheneys donated $104,425 to charity in 2006. This brings the Cheneys' total charitable contributions during his Vice Presidency to $7,800,019.

I'm trying to understand the point of this post. Correct me if I'm wrong. It was and is fine with you for Cheney to make money on the backs of the American People because he gives some of it away ? You can't be that simple can you ? http://commondreams.org/views02/0605-02.htm

that is exactly what he means but he doesn't feel Cheney is a bad guy even when he was doing work in Iran as head of Halliburton, even tho we had sanctions on them. He has no problem when Cheney and his buddy making billions from no bid contracts on the back of the tax payers. In essence what Cheney gives to charity is nothing more then tax payers money.

when I think of cheney & bush, 4 words come to mind.... let them eat cake.... that's their attitude towards the American People. these guys have no conscience... but they question everyone's patriotism......who are they to question anyone's patriotism ? I don't wish anything bad on anyone but justice requires that they be treated as the traders history will show them to be. I have no love for the slickster... they wanted to impeach him for lying about a BJ ????? they can't find anything to impeach these two for ????

--and you can't tell diff from pergury and BJ.

I put this up once for Edward once as a perspective of his peers--if you can't follow--maybe he can explain--

Text of petition to disbar Clinton
IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF PULASKI COUNTY, ARKANSAS

NO. CIV 2000 - 5677

JAMES A. NEAL, AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ARKANSAS SUPREME COURT COMMITTEE ON PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PLAINTIFF
vs.
WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON
DEFENDANT

COMPLAINT FOR DISBARMENT

Comes the Plaintiff, James A. Neal, as Executive Director of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Professional Conduct, by and through undersigned counsel, and for his Complaint for Disbarment against the Defendant, William Jefferson Clinton, states and alleges that:
1. The Plaintiff, at the direction of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Professional Conduct (the "Committee") and under the authority granted the Executive Director by the Procedures of the Arkansas Supreme Court Regulating Professional Conduct of Attorneys at Law, revised on January 15,1998 (the "Procedures"), initiates this disbarment action against Mr. Clinton.
2. Pursuant to Section 5K of the Procedures, this Court has subject matter jurisdiction over this action, and the Circuit Court of Pulaski County, Arkansas is the proper venue for the adjudication of this matter.
3. The Arkansas Supreme Court granted Mr. Clinton the privilege to practice law on September 7, 1973. Mr. Clinton's Arkansas Bar Identification Number is 73019. He is the 42nd President of the United States of America. At all times material to this case, Mr. Clinton resided in Washington, D.C., but remained subject to the Model Rules of Professional Conduct for the State of Arkansas. Mr. Clinton, pursuant to his request of June 30, 1990, placed his Arkansas license on inactive status for continuing legal education purposes.
4. On April 12,1999, Judge Susan Webber Wright, United States District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas, issued a 32 page Memorandum Opinion and Order (the "Order") in Jones v. Clinton, et al., Case No. LR-C-94-290, a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit A and incorporated by reference as if fully set forth herein.
5. In the Order, Judge Wright held Mr. Clinton in contempt of her December 11, 1997 Discovery Orders (the "Discovery Orders"). The Order served as the basis of a judicial referral to the Committee, and serves as the basis for this Complaint for Disbarment.
6. In the Order, Judge Wright found, inter alia, the following:
(a) That Mr. Clinton gave false, misleading and evasive answers that were designed to obstruct the judicial process to Ms. Jones' attorneys during Mr. Clinton's January 17, 1998 deposition;
(b) That Mr. Clinton gave intentionally false deposition testimony regarding whether he had ever been alone or ever engaged -in sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky;
(c) That Mr. Clinton, in a televised Address to the Nation on August 17, 1998, acknowledged that he "misled people" with regard to the questions posed to him by Ms. Jones' attorneys.
(d) That Mr. Clinton's contumacious conduct in the Jones v. Clinton case, coming as it did from a member of the bar and chief law enforcement officer of this Nation, was without justification and undermined the integrity of the judicial system.
7. As a result of these findings, Judge Wright sanctioned Mr. Clinton, ordering him to pay Ms. Jones' attorneys any reasonable expenses, including attorneys' fees, caused by his willful failure to obey the Court's Discovery Orders, and to pay the sum of $1,202.00 in expenses incurred by the Court in traveling to Washington, D.C. to preside over Mr. Clinton's deposition.
8. In the Order, Judge Wright offered Mr. Clinton the opportunity to demonstrate why he was not in civil contempt and why sanctions should not be imposed, or, alternatively, why the Court was otherwise in error in the manner it was proceeding.
9. Additionally, Judge Wright stayed enforcement of the Order for thirty (30) days to give Mr. Clinton an opportunity to request a hearing or to file an appeal.
10. In the Order, Judge Wright stated that the Court would entertain any legitimate and reasonable requests from Mr. Clinton for extensions of time in which to address the matter.
11. Mr. Clinton neither requested a hearing, nor did he appeal the Order.
12. On or about September 28, 1998, Mr. Clinton paid $89,484.05 in attorneys' fees to satisfy the Order, along with the $1,202.00 in costs incurred by the Court.
13. The conduct of Mr. Clinton, found and adjudged by Judge Wright in the Order, was motivated by a desire to protect himself from the embarrassment of his own conduct.
14. The conduct of Mr. Clinton found and adjudged by Judge Wright in the Order, collectively and singularly, violated the Arkansas Model Rules of Professional Conduct 8.4(c),(d).
15 Mr. Clinton's conduct found and adjudged by Judge Wright in the Order, constitutes "Serious Misconduct" as defined by Section 7B(3) of the Procedures, which defines "serious misconduct" as conduct involving "dishonesty, deceit, fraud and misrepresentation by the lawyer."16. Mr. Clinton's conduct found and adjudged by Judge Wright in the Order, damages the legal profession and demonstrates a lack of overall fitness to hold a license to practice law.

WHEREFORE, FOR THE REASONS STATED HEREIN, the Plaintiff prays for a judgment of this Court specifically finding that William Jefferson Clinton, Arkansas Bar ID#73019, has conducted himself in a manner that violates the Model Rules of Professional Conduct as adopted by the Arkansas Supreme Court; that Mr. Clinton's conduct warrants disbarment by the Arkansas Supreme Court, which would result in an Order from the Arkansas Supreme Court removing the name of William Jefferson Clinton from the registry of licensed attorneys maintained by the Clerk of the Arkansas Supreme Court; and for Plaintiffs attorneys' fees and costs and all other relief to which it may be entitled.

Respectfully submitted,
JAMES A. NEAL, Executive Director of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Professional Conduct, PLAINTIFF

comprehension problem : I said he lied about a BJ/ sex. That means he purjered himself. I can tell the difference. I understand this pathetic attempt to defend someone that can't be defended. My point was, Clinton liked to fool around and lie about it, I wish Bush & Cheney did the same. The Counrty would be in better shape. Clinton lied about sex. Bush & Cheney lie about war/life/death.....
