Upstairs watching sports on the big TV.
Boring very HOT day in dusty Oklahoma....again.

Other than supporting our military complex with hard earned dollars that could be used much better; why do we need NATO?

Russia supplies energy to much of Europe, hardly think they are going to invade...other than having Russia as the new "Boogeyman" why have NATO?

It is an antiquated relic of the past, serves no purpose in this day and age...

opinions?

NATO is a holdover from the cold war. The idea is that an attack on one is an attack on all. Separately, most the members would have no chance at all against the Russians.

It's speculation, of course, but it's certainly possible if not probable that Russia or the Warsaw Pact would have invaded some NATO countries.

The 9-11 terrorist attack on the USA resulted in the "War on Terror" against extremists in the Mideast, in which NATO members have assisted us.

Is NATO an antiquated relic? Who knows? Maybe vaccination against polio is a relic too, but would you not vaccinate your children because "probably they'll never need it?"

Think about it this way: The NATO discussion is just like the polio vaccine discussion. Damned if you do, and maybe double-damned you don't.

We contribute about $800 million a year to NATO. That's less than .05% of the federal spending of $3.800,000,000,000. To put that in perspective: If you make $50,000/year, .05% is $25.

So, really, who cares if we fund part of NATO? Only some loudmouth politician who's trying to rile up the riffraff in MAGA caps.
