i'm sure everyone by now knows that sammy was ejected from yesterdays game because it was discovered that his bat was corked?

i read different stories that attributed sammy giving various excuses about him using this bat from saying that he chose someone else's bat, or that he uses this bat in exhibition games only, to even apologizing altogether for using this bat.

but no matter what excuse is true, the question that i'm sure everyone is asking is,"are his stats tainted ?"

a ny daily news writer suggested that the hall of fame should check the bats that sosa donated to the hall after the 60 homer seasons. he said that if those bats test positive for cork, then there should be some indication in the record books about sammy cheated.

another writer, forgot where i read this, suggests that sosa's stats should be erased completely because he cheated.

the last few years baseball fans have been wondering why there are so many homers in the major leagues. the reason was always attributed to steroid use (mark mcguire).
but maybe the answer is that sammy is not the only player using a cork bat.

i would like to hear what other madjackers think ?

do you think that other players are using these type of bats ?
do you think that sammy's stats are tainted?

Why would a player ever use a corked bat for anything?

Exhibition or otherwise?

Everyone out there who thinks that Sammy Sosa ?accidently? picked up a corked bat last night raise your hand.

A Mistake? RIGGGGGHHHHHTTTTT!!!

I think Sammy's stats were tainted before this incident and even more tainted now. In fact, it is a shame that baseball has allowed these steroids to be used. Records that stood for years now mean nothing because of these pill popping freaks.
Before this I did not think they were using corked bats but now everyone is under suspision.

Yep, without the corked bat, Slingin' Sammy would have hit 2-3 HRs a year.

The guy hits balls a long way with a corked bat or an uncorked bat and the fact that he had one yesterday doesn't change anything.

WOW, completely dis-agree with you. He cheated, plain and simple. If he hits it a long way without a corked bat then why did he need the corked one? I can pay my bills every month just fine weather I rob a bank or not, so by your logic it would be OK to hold up the local bank.

i just heard that the "authorities" took 76 of sosa's bats for investigation. i never thought players have so many bats available. he must think he will break alot of bats during a game.

bobby,

i disagree with you. if he does use corked bats, then he is cheating & lessens the stats of other players & baseball is a game of stats.

Everyone is assuming that he's lying and under that assumption, he cheated. I don't necessarily believe that he didn't know he was using a corked bat, but to get back in the lineup so quickly after his toe injury, maybe he thought he needed a lighter bat. He's broken bats before and this is the first time he's been caught. It doesn't diminish his records, no more than McGuire using his juice, Brett using excess pine tar, MLB tightening up the balls for the season after the strike or any changes that make more runs scored.

I've hit corked bats before and have noticed the distance that the ball travels was negligible.

Robbing a bank? That's taking the analogy a bit far. How about have I ever "embellished" on a resume, cheated on a test to get a degree so that I could have the job I have today? And Yes, I've done both.

I don't know if any of you have seen today's Sportscenter or not. But the thing is they showed a video of Sammy carrying his bat out to the plate to bat, and on the top of the bat was a large "C" printed on it.

Just something to think about.

Sammy's probably off the juice cause he was worried about testing positive....so he went from the juice to the cork. If he was doing them both in years past.....then he's a serious puss for not hitting 70 imo

He's absolutely ONE BIG TAINTED STAT

yes but the one he was using in a official MLB game was corked.

Suspend him for rest of the season and while your at it test him for steroids.
..............................................................
"Steroids are changing the game and making a mockery of the record book

"Perhaps we need to put an asterisk by the numbers produced in the steroid era.
Through 1994, a player hit 50 or more home runs in a season just 18 times.
Since '94, there have been 15, 50-homer seasons.
Some of the spike in stats can be attributed to
corked and maple bats, juiced balls, watered-down pitching and smaller stadiums.
How much can be attributed to steroids?

Barry Bonds' Hard Work or Steroids

Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants, who set the single-season home run record with 73 last season, denied using steroids and said tests would show he's clean.

''Doctors ought to quit worrying about what ballplayers are taking,'' Bonds told The Associated Press last week. ''What players take doesn't matter. It's nobody else's business. The doctors should spend their time looking for cures for cancer. It takes more than muscles to hit homers. If all those guys were using stuff, how come they're not all hitting homers?''

But his emergence as the game's top home run hitter can be attributed to one undeniable factor -- Barry is a lot bigger than he was in 1997 when he weighed only 190 pounds. The only way he could compete with powerful sluggers like Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, he had to add more bulk to his body, too. Indeed, Barry's ascent to the home run record is both startling and spectacular, the greatest season in the history of baseball. No one but he and his personal trainer know how he was able to add 38 pounds of bulk to his wiry frame.

Is Bonds using steroids and performance-enhancing drugs and substances? Although he didn't use the S-word when asked the question, Giants' pitching coach Dave Righetti said Bonds "takes supplements to help himself." Since baseball does not have a drug-testing program, no one but Bonds knows what all he is taking, but having studied anabolic steroids for decades and having discussed their use with experts and medical doctors, the body and facial characteristics of those on steroids, and the large weight gains in a short period of time.

It is not too difficult to determine which players are using them.
The cheaters are all bulked up.
Their faces have become puffy and large, even the facial skin has a different texture.

One could also tell by asking Barry to drop his pants. He's probably hung like a white guy by now.

The average suspension for using a corked bat (at least in the five or six times I remember it happening, is about 7-8 games. I'm sure Sosa will get the same thing.

I mean, yeah, he messed up and got caught, but it's not THAT big of a deal. There's a lot of argument as to if it even helps a hitter, and if it does, it didn't become illegal until around the 50's, so anybody with huge stats before that (Ruth, Foxx, etc.) could've easily used the same thing. I just think people are making too big of a deal out of this. Give him his suspension and be done with it.
