You are correct in watching the money being bet. A line change indicates that too much money has been bet on one side of the bet. The bookmakers want to have 50-50 betting. Sometimes it is a good bet to "follow the money" as some big bets were placed, and maybe "somebody knows something." This is especially true near game time.

I have no statistics to quote, but there usually is a reason a lot of money is flowing to one side of a game...IP
