I had this very scam attempted on me...The guy started out sort of mumbling, but with a few grandpaws mixed in... It was very well thought out. I am a little hard of hearing so I was helping him i.e. Who is this john ? "Bingo" Yes ,this is John Grandpa The rest was pretty much as above...In my case he had flown to Canada on a whim with his friend for another friends wedding ...his friend had extra airline tickets ,etc ,etc They had one drink at the reception ,but were in a fender bender in their rented auto...court appointed atty basically got them off due to some procedural errors w/ re to the drinking ...BUT the charge compromised their insurance agreement with the auto lease and they were going to have to come up with the damages on their own...needed to get out of Canada by next day non redeemable airline tickets, etc, etc Really good. My only tip off was that my grand kids don't call me "grandpa". He even sounded like my GS,but I was hesitant and ask a leading question about his sister, being at home with his mom Then afraid he had misunderstood and thought I was asking about his brother (has no sister) I embelished a little and asked what had transpired when his sister had her accident in Canada last year. Nailed him ...he was going to call me back in 10 minutes and I hurriedly checked to see if we could trap the little B******,but there is nothing you can do. I would say based on how good they were in my case, there have been a lot who have been taken off and it is a shamejust heard on the news about some scam they have out there now where elderly ppl recieve phone calls and a person will pretend to be a grandchild and claim they are in a canadian jail. they explain why they are in jail and then apparently beg the grandparents not too tell the rest of the family about it and explain they need $6,000 too bail them outta jail. They then put one of the other scamartists on the phone, who then pretends too be a canadian authority figure. They explain to the grandparents how too send the money and even go as far as to explain how to go about contacting a canadian lawyer if they choose too fight it. Apparently it is pretty thought out and thourough because they claim that hundreds have already fell victim too it here in the US. Forget what news channel I saw it on, but figured I would share just incase one of you MJers are contacted next :0074
