It has happened plenty of times. I can recall Florida State with Danny Kannell get slaughtered by Virginia as 20 point favorites in the mid 1990's while being ranked #1. I believe Thomas Jones was a freshman on the Virginia club that gave the Criminoles their first ever ACC loss at the time.
